Just got my permit so I need to start learning. Not quite sure how to go about it. Did a friend/relative teach you? Did you take a classes/driving school?
I'm opting to just pay and take lessons, since driving in NYC is no joke, and i'd like to learn all the tricks of the trade. Not to mention, i don't want to suck at driving my dads new car. Accidents are bad :)
So what were your experiences in learning to drive?

My dad gave me the keys, sat down in the passengers seat, and told me to drive.

My dad.

Edit: Actually, in NJ there is a mandatory 6 hours behind the wheel class with a certified instructor, so I also did that.

Playing racing games in the arcade when I was younger, then cutting 10 acres every weekend on a riding lawnmower, finally got my hardship license when I was 14 and took out the old beater. No human has ever taught me how to drive, I just learned from my mistakes and video games.

Wasn't your dad afraid that you'd make some kind of mistake? If i'd get into an accident while trying to learn, it would be my dads fault, not mines. If i get into an accident with an instructor, it would be his fault (cause he has the 2nd brake).

I don't even think that thought crossed his mind.

No, if you get into an accident with your dad in the passenger seat, it's your fault. If you get into an accident with the instructor in the passenger's seat, it's your fault.

If you're behind the wheel, and you hit something, it's your fault.

Driving is pretty easy, though. Don't worry too much about getting in an accident, just have your dad take you somewhere out of town without a lot of traffic to start out.

Yeah but driving correctly isn't. Go take some lessons. Mommy and Daddy are just going to teach you what ever bad habbits they picked up.

Mine did too up until last year. It was great - saved time and money.

wow someone older than me!!

i learned to drive,alot,by watching my parents when they drove;
and by them allowing me to back the car out of the garage; and turn it around in the driveway.

I took Drivers Education,when i had already had my learners permit,for about 8 months.
The first day in the car {driving part of the class} The instructor/teacher said who wants to drive first,
{there was 4 kids one teacher per group}
I said I do,i got in,moved the seat almost all the way back;buckled up my seat belts,adjusted the interior and drivers door mirrors,and asked the teacher to move the pass door mirror out a little;and to please put on his seat belt.

He looked at me,and said;Ok,get out,Who else wants to drive.?

I was like WHat??

He said you already know how to drive,let someone else have a chance,you moved the seat,and mirriors,
And put on your seatbelts,you know what your doing,Let someone else drive..

LOL,I was bummed,but he was right,2 of the kids in the group,had No Clue. ;)

this is true. I had my parents teach me to drive, and I honestly think it's the reason I'm not really a good driver.

Did you drive 50 miles in the snow to go to school?

I learned in high school drivers' education.
