This seems too scary for me to fix myself.
*shrug* At your age, replacing a section of copper pipe shouldn't be much of a challenge. I guess my husband and I were raised to be self-reliant. I know how to turn off the water, drain pipes, and could figure out how to fit copper pipe correctly (maybe with a little supervision the first time.)
Of course, if I was facing working on a gas water heater, I'd have the gas lines done by a professional. I wouldn't want anything to blow up or gas to leak and kill us in our sleep. heh
