How did you go about picking your major?

Just as the topic says.

Was it super easy, or was it a struggle? How did you actually figure it out?

I'm one of those poor souls who STILL doesn't know what I want to do with my life, even after three years of community college. 😱

Please share all comments/suggestions/opinions.

I went with what was easiest for me... I'm inclined to do what comes naturally whenever possible. 😀

My husband, on the other hand, chose something difficult to prove that he could do it.

Do something that suits your personality and will give you a sense of fulfillment... follow your bliss, so to speak. Chances are good you won't be working in your field anyway! 😛

My father is an electrical engineer, my brother is an electrical engineer.

I chose sociology.

j/k 😛, I'm graduating in EE this December. Guess it just felt like the right thing to do.

I never even had to think about it.

My dad bought me my first computer at a rather late age...I was in grade 9 or 10 when I got my first box. Shortly thereafter I took my first Computer Science (grade 10) course. At this point I wasn't even thinking about my major of course. I was thinking about how many aliens I was going to kill in Duke Nukem this afternoon 😉

I loved my computer, and I loved CS10. So I started on the long addictive road of computer upgrading, and I took CS11 and 12, loved them to. By the time I got to college there was no other choice.

I never even made a decision really. As soon as I got my first College Calendar I flipped to the Computer Science section, I didn't even think of looking at other programs.

I'm 3/4 done now, and I have looked at some other options, but I've never thought that I'd rather be in a different major.

It was one of the easiest non-decisions I've ever made.

I enjoyed chemistry and engineering, so a buddy of mine suggested chemical engineering when I was a sophomore in HS. I stuck with his idea, and I'm working on my PhD now.

All because of a guy in my english class.

Well....I'm good at the "easy" majors...like English, Sociology, Political Science...etc.

My main goal is to get a job that entails a lot of travelling, I really want to see a lot of the world. I've always liked business, but I'm not sure what a business degree exactly is.

A lot of you guys have the technical majors, I wish I was good at subjects like math and physics, then I'd defentely choose something like engineering. I love computers, but I don't have the smarts to do programming or engineering.

First off, I used a quote to help me build where I wanted to go, to give me an idea as to what direction I wanted to set myself off into...

"Find a job that you like go to go and you'll never work again"

I used a combination of what I like to do and what I'm good at....
I'm good at drawing, I like drawing, I'm good at using computers, I like using computers, I like movies, and I like cartoons

From that I looked at various art majors and I looked at computer majors, it happened that very few crossed paths. I ended up coming up with Digital animation I love it... I'm hoping that I'm going to be working for dreamworks or Pixar someday creating the next "Shrek" or "A bugs life", by then I'm sure that we'll have no need for actors because every character will be digital anyhow, the job outlook looks good.

Try to match your major up to what you like to do, make your likes fairly general... don't be like I like playing NBA live 2002 on PS2.... Be more like "I like playing games" it helps a lot.

Alright, let me try it out.

I like travelling, i like the business world, i like computers. What major entails a combination of those three?

Oh yeah, I'd love to make a lot of money. 😉

Choose something you enjoy. Unless you're in a technical field which requires training in a very specific skills set, your major won't mean as much after a few years of professional working experience anyway.

As far as degress for traveling, that could be lots of different things, but business-oriented fields seem the most likely candidates. Perhaps one of the "cooler" business degrees like marketing would provide more opportunities. I work at an ad agency and we have quite a few marketing people who bounce all over the place. Our public relations people are constantly flying all over the place too so maybe that's one to consider.

When I started college, MIS was the major to be in around this area. In this area, they were handing out jobs to people with MIS degrees, so I majored in that. It also helped that I was into computers. Picking that major seems like a massive mistake right about now though. I recently graduated, and there isn't a job in sight. At least I still have my part-time job.

Im still working on it but I want to become a Mechanical Engineer. $$ 🙂. I also like designing and working on mostly everything mechanical anyway, so thats what I picked. Wasnt too hard.

funny story for me. My parents wanted me to be doctor and/or lawyer. I"m like no way. I thought about a music major. ThenI was heading off to the business field because my bro was one. I chose accounting. Then I watched this doctor movie and wanted to be a doctor. Then I watch this other movie and wanted to be a psychologist. Then I heard soem good stuff about Real Estate. Then I thought that since I like computers, and had a possible business major, I chose MIS.

So this was all thoughts during my senior year in HS, so I was still good. finally, my dad said "I don't want to have 2 business sons." He said "I want an enginneer." So I was like......."ok." so by the time I got to college, I chose Comp E as my major. Now I"m heading to my second year.

tip of the day: Just because your not good at math or physics or whatever doesnt' mean that you shouldn't major in an Engineering field. I sucked at math. Teh first year, they put me in good ol College Algerbra. All it means that you will go one step at a time, and take it slow. After a couple of summer sessions, you should be fine.

so just do what you like, and if you work hard enough, it should work out.

You can find a job with travel anywhere. Getting a job like that is easy. Getting out of it is the hard part. It's sounds fun but even for a single guy you get tired of being on the road. But that's just my opinion. The first 2 jobs I was offered involved travel in and out of the country. I still travel in my job now but not as much. Bad thing is being a software engineer you still only see a computer screen wherever you go 😛

i'm having trouble deciding myself. engineering was sorta the field i was thrown into.. was good at math, dad's a mech e. two years gone by and i've found i don't like it (comp e). I've always had an interest in business, and was thinking of double majoring (DIS.. pretty much MIS). Maybe i'll switch into if it can, it is of course a limited enrollment... and if i don't get it.. i have no idea. I was considering maybe switching over to compsci, but the fustrations of programming i don't think i could deal with. And even if i get into DIS, the job market just looks dim.. and i face a huge student loan... i dunno, i try not to think about the loan but it always creeps back into my head 🙁

So, don't worry, you ain't the only one.

I have been having trouble with this myself, when I grew up I wanted to be a doctor, then it became cs.
Now I am thinking maybe english. I am good with math etc, 720 math SAT etc.

But I really enjoy reading etc, I landed an internship doing network admin out of high school and it was great and all but the cubicle lifestyle really took a lot out of me. It just seemed so pointless in the face of what a life could be. Spending in those carpeted walls and petty office politics just seemed so vapid. I have done well in both the cs and english courses that I have taken and actually put work into. But as I havent chosen a goal for myself I have been aimlessy slacking and falling away. I dont really know what I would do with an english degree, whether I have a novel etc in me or not. I don't know that that is in anyway more significant or meaningful than coding software that runs cow milking machines. A lot of different majors(CE, EE, CS, English, Chemistry, philosphy, maybe a little business, physics) interest me, but when I pick it all apart it just seems to be empty. I'd rather be meeting people and enjoying nature or a day on the town, blah blah blah Im useless and will stop

edit: just finished my second year at UK

I was going to be a psychology major, but I found out I was more interested "why" the mind works instead of "how", and changed to philosophy (I'm thinking I'm going to lean more twoards political philosophy). I'm minoring in psychology.

Next, for my masters, I'm thinking about majoring in another subject starting with the letter "p". I seem to have good luck with that letter. Painting? Physiology? Political Science? Hmm, the possbilities are endless (as long as it starts with the letter "p" anyway)!😀

I knew when I was going to college that I was going to major in Computer Engineering. The thought of designing and constructing video cards and other types of computer components was very appealing to me. So far, I haven't changed. I won't change. I'll show them I can fu*king make it.
