I'm not entirely sure what gains a person Elite status, except that it must first begin by just showing up.

Everything after that is problematic.

One can imagine that certainly you won't attain Elite by publicly suggesting the mod's should change their underwear a little more often. =8^o

I still think that post count shouldn't be the main factor for elite membership.

take me for example. :) :) :) ;) ;)

don't post around useless threads in OT that much. most of my posts are legitimate computer questions and helpful answers. and I've been a member of the boards for 2 years.

those should count for something!

Hey Mod(s), was there something you edited out of Joecool223's
post? Cause if you didn't, you shouldn't have banned him.

Stefan,

He was posting random, unrelated posts in SEVERAL threads. Not only that, but after further research, I determined that he had been banned before under a past username. That is what earned him the ban, and the cold shoulder.

<< I still think that post count shouldn't be the main factor for elite membership. >>

Post count doesn't mean squat here, let alone becomming an Elite.

Eg. ME :D My 2086 dont have me there. As Viper stated above:

<< Some of you may have noticed that a new status, "Elite Member" has begun appearing. There is also some speculation as to how this is achieved, so here is some clarification.

1. While there is no minimum post requirement, the total must be substantial, and number of posts is not the only criteria.

2. Length of time as a member, while important, is not specifically defined. But, racking up a couple thousand posts right after joining is not going to get you there.

3. The members contribution must be valuable to the other members. This does not necessarily mean one who answers many hardware questions, but also members who post entertaining, enlightening, educational, or just plain fun material.

4. The member must be supportive of the BBS, and of AnandTech. To clarify this, it will not matter if you have 10,000 posts if you feel compelled to personally attack my Moderators when they are just trying to do their job.

This is not to say that constructive criticism and suggestions aren't welcome. They are. But, many of you seem to think it's okay to throw stones at people who volunteer their time out of a love for AnandTech.

@#%^@&! I always miss the interesting comments. :p

Anyways, I got nominated in a thread by Uber-Elite compuwiz1 with 1 or 2 people seconding the nomination and low and behold, I was promoted into the exalted Cult of E. Then I @zz-kissed the AnandTech Moderators a bit to solidify my membership... and the C-note didn't hurt either. ;)

I can't say you can necessarily judge anyone simply by the status, Elite or otherwise (except maybe for The Boss ;)). Part of the selection process is pretty arbitrary obviously. Hmmm... I wonder what it would take to take for us to get kicked out of the Cult, heheh. :D

Valhalla1,

I meant that post count doesnt make you popular here. Paulson had over 10,000 posts, that did not make him popular, or elite.

We have an elite member with like 10 posts (hopefully he gets well). We have elite members with just over 1,000 posts.

I basically meant that post count is one of the least important factors in becomming an elite member.

Ooops... Popped back into the double digits for posts per day. ....must...refrain...from...posting...too...much......

<< well, ass-kissing the moderators may or may not help. >>

Yeah, I was just joking as you probably already knew. In fact, I just logged on one day to find my status had changed. Mucho surprised, I was. I didn't find out until a bit later that somebody had nominated me. Come to think of it, I believe it was in one of Paulsonator's many threads. So... I owe it all to Paulson. :D

Erm... seems to me the whole discussion in this thread is focussing on something else than the question was..

The question wasnt *how* to get elite status, but (more interesting) what were the individual reasons for which the current elite members got their status.

Just blurping again.

Joecool223 was banned for being a dumbass in multiple threads nothing that he specifically said in this one. You basically become Elite for being yourself. Unfortunately some people become banned for being themselves too. The first and most important rule (probably the only one that really applies) is don't worry about it. You're either elite when you start here or you're not. All it takes is to be noticed for it and have your title changed to reflect what you have been all along.

EDIT Oh sure PCAddict give the short reply while I am writing a book on the topic.:p (I still say the tongue smiley looks sick)

I'll tell you how NOT to get to Elite that I have seen - be like the fairly constant stream of idiots that come in and immediatly try to make a name for themselves by attacking Elite members. Russ has had that a lot in the past, Red (although I think he enjoys slamming them back :) ) and he tends to have it happen to. Recently it even happened to GF in one thread.

Its not smart and always winds up in someone getting banned (who? - hint, all the elite members are still here.)
I don't know why these brainiacs walk in and say "Hey! He's pretty popular - if I attack him I'll be cool and appreciated here!" :(

Note - I'm not posting this at you, Kamiam - I honestly don't know your history with Red. This is just something I've seen from a fair number of new people to OT.
