How did you do in the market vs the Indexes in 2012?

I made 14.4% despite having 25% of my portfolio in Bonds (which only made 4%). 😱

How did you do?
And which index do people in the US usually compare to? Dow or S&P500?

I only invest in index funds (US and foreign), so: + 0%
🙂

The much-hyped active fund(s) in my 401k didn't do as well as Vanguard's total stock market fund, or their S&P 500 fund. What a surprise.

Go-go Gadget Roth IRA.

I'd hate to see my dad's retirement account performance. I took a peek at that...a lot of funds with 1.5-1.8% fees, and a chunk of it was in some gold fund. Ick.

Yeah, I hate the active fund choices in our 401k, but it's supposed to be upgraded sometime this year to include a set of Vanguard index funds. The 401k providers charge smaller companies more to offer good funds like that since they don't include any kickbacks. We don't have enough in the 401k to go straight to someone like Vanguard.

Kickbacks? Surely you mean "revenue sharing." 😉😛

Don't know the final tally yet of my 401k but lucky to have two great bond funds that make up 50% of my portfolio.

TPINX
PTTRX

The rest is split between Vanguard Windsor II, a real estate fund which did great, a crappy Janus Overseas fund which did poorly and a few small company funds which did great.

Yikes and a 1.39% expense ratio for that fund 🙁

And that's the cheapest one I've got there, aside of the money market fund, which has had a 0.00% return since the fund started a few years ago. That's got an ER of 0.66%. Nothing like having a bank account that charges you money for the pain of stashing your money.

...Oops, my mistake. There is a 1.38% fund. :awe: It's about 25% bonds though. The (cheap Vanguard) bond funds are staying in my IRA.
The costs go up to 1.89% for the Smallcap World fund (RSLBX).

At least our financial adviser will have a nice retirement fund built up for himself.

Last Feb. I invested $100 in the ATOT BS Fund (ATbsF).
At the closing bell Friday, I was up >$789,000.00.

Keep it coming, kiddies!

Not sure how I did in calendar year 2012 yet, but my annualized rate of return from 2003-2011 was ~8.2%. That number will probably go up once the 2012 numbers are taken into account.

Net worth is . . . well . . . I won't share the specific number. But I'm pretty happy over all. Didn't quite make the goal I set for myself when i was 19, but I came pretty close. Another 2-3 years and I will be there. Might actually be able to retire at 50 or 51, assuming the market behaves.

14.4% as well on my 401k, according to JPM. Happy with that. Will update my spreadsheet later, I expect it's actually a point or two higher.

Don't know my eTrade account ROR, but I'm sure it beat the markets.

for me, net gain between 2008 (great recession started and a HUGE plunge in stock market) and 2011 was 0%. basically, my portfolio took 3 years to recover.

so between 2008 - 2012, i'm up 14.4% or and avg of 3.6%/yr

wait.. you wrote 2003.. lol,, looked like an 8.
i was wondering how u avg 8%/yr since 2008. 😛

The bulk of my money is in my 401K which is mostly invested in higher risk small/mid company funds. They are up around 15-16%
That said, about 30% is in more conservative stock funds.

Then my WAG stock is up around 30% (about 10% the value of my 401K), and my AMD stock is down around 80%. (about 1% the value of my 401K)

Made about 4% (ignoring currency conversion), so half the Dow on stocks.

The other chunk of my money is in GICs (your CDs?), and luckily, most of those were bought when the yield was about 4%.

So, probably 4% gross.

-- Doesn't know dafuq he's doing. Should stick it in a mutual fund and be done with it.

12.9% with the Boglehead Three Fund Portfolio. Set it and forget it.

u mean this?
Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSMX)
Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund (VGTSX)
Vanguard Total Bond Market Fund (VBMFX)

only 12.9? how much in Total Bond Fund? (which was only 4%)

Yep that's it.

About 15% is VBMFX currently, but it was higher during at times during the year so my return is lower than a constant 15%.
