How did you close the bridges on your Duron?

I currently have my system running stable at 1GHz but I have read a few posts where people mentioned that the lead degrades over time. I am about to take it apart anyway soon for upgrade reasons. I would like to remove the pencil lead and use another method to close the bridges and want ideas as to the best approach. I bet some of you have some great ideas so could you please share them? Thanks!

I penciled mine in, and for some reason I am stuck at 808 Mhz no matter how I set the switches on my A7V. BTW its a 700 Mhz retail duron. I'm using a copper cap on top of the core to protect it from chipping, and the chip is running hot (up to 57 c).

I dunno if I got a poor overclocker, or If I have some bad pencilling.

Anyone got an idea on a better way that is easy?

Shaftatplanetquake - from what I have read on other posts and around the web, that copper sham you are using may be causing your heat problems. That is really hot for your processor. Mine usually does not reach 50C after an hour of Quake 3 play time. I have a good (although loud) HSF, the GlobalWin FOP38 with arctic silver thermal grease, but I would think even a decent HSF and thermal compound (and no sham) would keep it cooler than that. Just a thought... try taking it off and being very careful putting your HSF back on.

BK,

I think that he is not using a 'shim'.At sometime, some site on the web actually had a thin copper spacer. It didn't have a hole for the actually chip, it was a thin piece of copper that sat flat on the bottom of the heatsink. If this is the type, pitch it.

The best way to connect the bridges is with the Loctite Defogger Repair Kit # 15067. Cost about $6.99. If you search around, one the Anand members was soldering the bridges for about $11. If I recall he has years of exeperience with micro-soldering.

Its not a sham(shim?). Its a tiny little copper cap that is just big enough to go over the core. I purchased it from Bower64 over on [H]ardforums.

Its supposed to not only protect the cpu, but cool it as well. And I have a dab of arctic silver on both sides of the cap.

Were you talking about the same thing I am?

Shaftatplanetquake, it might be the penciling job. I had a 600 that was stuck at 800 also (I use an elec. conductive pen). Upon closer view, it turned out that I didn't completely connect the 3rd & 4th bridges. After reworking them, she was rock solid at 900 :D at ~36c idle & 41c full load...

This was done with Epox 8KTA+, btw.

Main reason I wanted to get a cap, though, was because I killed a 800 Mhz tbird with that damn chrome orb.. its WAY too hard to take off.

I've had three Durons, now, and I'm about to have my fourth.. The first one I had was a week 36 Duron 600MHz, which never worked with the pencil trick, so I ended up using Loctite resin to unlock it.. Eventually got it running stable at 950MHz. The second one I got was an 800MHz week 41 that also ran stable at 950MHz after using the pencil trick.. My newest Duron 600MHz is week 25 and it's already unlocked.. About to see how high it goes in a few minutes.

My Tbird has all the L1 bridges soldered closed :)
LMK if your CPU wants the same treatment.

Re-drew the pencil lines, they are perfect. Did some tinkering with the dip switches just now, figured out that no matter what I do the cpu won't post pas 840(8.0 multiplier and 105 fsb), and won't boot any faster than 808(strangely... 8.0 multiplier and 100 fsb- someone explain that to me..). that copper cap I got sent must be pretty crappy cuz its supposed to make it slightly cooler, it makes it slightly hotter. As a matter of fact, my system would restart itself upon every bootup after I made an adjustment with a little more arctic silver (it was looking pretty thin).

I yanked out that copper cap and am typing as we speak, cpu temp 53 celcius. This is just a crappy cpu that runs too hot and won't overclock well at all.

I need to see about trading it to someone who doesn't overclock...

I used a chemtronics microtip conductive pen. I did the same for my friend, but the tip got cloged or something, so I ended up taking off the cap and using a safty pin.

I tried the pencil first, but it kept wearing off, and didn't work right, and at the worst times (at a LAN party :().â??

DaddyG and Shaftplanetquake... please excuse my ignorance! I did indeed mean 'shim' and not sham. We were all on the same page though. :) Thanks for correcting me. I will try to pick that Loctite Defogger Repair Kit # 15067 from one of the local auto shops this weekend. I have not had any problems with the pencil lead yet but I put it on really thick! I am sure that I will run into problems unless I do something about it now though. Thanks for the advice.
