How did you build your DVD movie collection?

What's the cheapest way to build a (legal) DVD collection?
Other than half.com, where is there a good place to buy used discs?
What are the best places to buy DVDs online?

I've got the DVD bug (now, after owning a player for almost 2 years) and I'm plotting a way to build a sizable collection for cheap.

Quite a few from Columbia House. If you use the right codes you can get some great deals.

Sales at Best Buy.

Deep Discount DVD

DVD Empire

Wal Mart, Target, or wherever I found a good deal on a movie I wanted. Made a killing at a Borders here that had a 1/2 off sale for 4 hours one weekend.

I've gotten most of mine at Best Buy. I usually just wait for sales there or at Circuit City. But sometimes Wal-mart, Target, or Kmart will have stuff on sale. It seems like most new DVDs are on sale (or marked down a couple of bucks, anyway) in the week that they come out. Other times, I usually just buy older movies that are cheaper (these go on sale quite frequently, too). I've only bought one DVD online. Can't say I was too pleased with the service, so I'm more inclined to buy at actual stores.

Never had a problem with either of them. DVD Empire can take a while to ship but they always get me what I want. Even had an order stolen once when I lived in an apartment and they didn't hassle me a bit about replacing it.

How? I signed up with Columbia House, and got a few to start off. Then I got lazy and was stuck with atrocious movies like Pearl Harbor and that damn Grinch movie. I traded them in(still sealed) to get $9 off for Moulin Rouge at EB. Then I found 3 more movies in the living room, still in the original shipping package. Apparently I've paid, unknowingly, for American Pie 2, What Women Want and The Mexican at about $30 a pop. That night I wrote one of the most hostile letters I could write without using profanities to Columbia House to cancel my membership. I recognize that CH didn't lie to me, but it was best to direct my anger at them. I sure as hell wasn't gonna get mad at myself. Not after finding out that I'm out $90 because I paid for American Pie 2, What Women Want, and The Mexican. Since then, I haven't bought any DVDs. Whenever I get the itch, I think about it this way: How do I feel about taking out a $20 bill in my wallet, set it next to my DVD player, and watch it collect dust for a loooong period of time? Because that's what my DVDs are doing right now. It's one of the silliest things I can do with my $20.

I usually get my DVDs used from BlockBuster... They buy a lot of copies of a movie when it comes out, but then sells them off later in a couple of weeks...

dont have to deal with shipping and stuff...

I built my collect from the good ol dot.com days of $10 off $20 coupons. Now I go to a blockbuster that has most of their PVD DVDs for $9.99. Over 400 DVDs in my collection and I'm still averaging about $9 per dvd.

see thats exactly what CH wanted you to do.... if you don't bother to work the system it'll work you

you can have those cancelled online before they're even sent to you. You just have to have the willingness to get Cheap DVDs and you'll get them. Otherwise CH will take the DVDs and shove them up your a$$ before you realize where you are

I just wait until they go on sale. I have paid less than $13 for almost every one of my DVDs and they were all new. The exspensive ones that never go on sale I put on my Christmas or birthday wishlist.

Columbia House DVD, but nothing beats the times in 1999 and early 2000 of getting DVDs for free or for the cost of shipping.

Build a time machine, go back to at least 1998 and go to dvdtalk fourums and get in on the countless deals like so many of us did. A good portion of the DVD's I got back then were less then $5.00 if not free all together. Now all you can do is look for the rare deal or get used ones if you don't want to do Columbia House.

I have been buying them since late '98. The best way is to scout out the dvdtalk forums (as others have said) for nice deals, or Columbia House. You can get DVD's for around $10 each if you do it right.

I've purchased DVDs from places like Media Play, Best Buy, and Circuit City. Most of my DVDs, however, have come from Overstock.com and Blockbuster. I've bought MANY DVDs at Blockbuster for $10. They are previewed, but you could never tell.

I do a bit of what the above have mentioned as well as checking out the local pawn shops. You never know what you can find.
I just got LOTR for less than $10 the other day, and it's never been scratched or anything.

My DVD collection is around 300+, 90% of them are still shrink wrapped and I'll be selling most of them probably in a few weeks. I've gathered most of them and I'll be putting them into my DVDProfile.com DVD collection. If you're interested in buying a few PM me with "I want to buy your DVD's" and keep an eye on my sig.

I'm thinking $12 for previously viewed and $14 for sealed, will offer free USPS shipping if you buy a certain number.

My average per DVD cost including shipping is around $8 it's low because of 3 reasons:
1) The great gravy train days of 1998 - 2001, those days are looooooong gone.
2) I owe my Ferengi addiction to the pro's at DVDTalk.com
3) DVDPriceSearch.com which is the DVD equivelant of techbargains.
