How did the old Nintendo guns work?

Considering it didn't matter how big your TV is, how far you were from it, what angle you shot from..how does it, or any other gun work?
 
I remember in duck hunt when you fired, the screen flashed and a little white square appeared for a split second around the ducks. I would assume that the camera in the gun looked for that square.
 
Wow. For the last year I had been thinking about this. That seem so simple and I was never able to figure it out.
