How did my site get hacked?

I'm positive that I didn't hint to, nor give out my password, either on AIM or anywhere else. Haven't told anyone my password. I'm wondering how in the hell my site got hacked?
The "hacker" contacted me right before doing so, telling me it would go down. And it did. A couple minutes later, he told me I could "have it back" and it went up.

It's hosted on Dreamhost (which is crap).

... there is an infinite number of possibilities as to how or why someone might have "hacked" your website.

if you're hosting through a well known domain, you're more prone to attacks. try hosting from home...and patch patch patch!!!

look at your logs, identify the IP and block it with an .htaccess file.
Google "counter script", and if you come up with a relavant link to your content, act accordingly. Sounds like he did you a favor;)

That's what happens when you use hosting companies that aren't as well managed and staffed. If you need near 100% uptime and better security, go with the big guys like 1&1 and Network Solutions. They aren't much more expensive and there's always staff ready to help. I have about 6 hosts on 1&1 and I've never had them go down much less hacked.

And how would I identify his IP out of the hundreds of IPs?

How did he contact you? When exactly? when did the site go down? when was it back up?

If you cannot figure it out from that, give it up.
