How did he do that?

So I found something I really wanted on ebay. New carpet for my car. My carpet is old, and nasty, and worn in alot of places. It's only $130 to replace, and I have the money, so what the hell. I read about it for a while, and do my research. It's a great deal, it's quality carpet. I'm going to buy this carpet. So I call up my boyfriend, and I tell him about the carpet, and how I am excited about it , and how nice it will be to finally have this carpet. And he says 11 words. "Do you really think you need to spend that much money?"
BAM! I am knocked off balance. I was so sure I was gonna get that carpet but now, may'be I shouldn't. May'be he is right. Do I spend too much money? I guess I don't really need new carpet anyway. It wouldn't hurt to find a better deal. I should keep the money in the bank as long as possible, just in case.
Now I am not going to get the carpet, and feel horrible for thinking about getting it.
How the hell did he do that?

Because you were already having doubts about buying it. If it's an old car, the carpet isn't worth it. Old car = < 2000 to me.

All women spend too much money... when in doubt just say "are you sure you need that?" or "thats sounds a bit pricey, no?" or even better "well if you think you should spend it, go ahead, but don't say I didn't warn you"...

All have the same final result, girl feels guilty and guys win another round ;)

It's an 88. But it cost me $1000 and has been running for a few years with no problems.

If you like the car spend the money. Its pretty simple. Is your bf heterosexual? Most guys pour tons of money into cars that aren't worth much. I'm more then guilty myself.....

Get the carpet. Did you shut down when he said that or actually give a valid argument as to why you need/want the carpet? Something like: My current carpet is nasty and ripped, the normal replacement is hundreds of dollars, I can get it here for $130, it's a great deal and I'm going to get it. If he's logical and a decent guy all around then you're fine and he'll understand. If he's controlling and doesn't want you to spend your own money then dump him.

I agree. Girls do spend too much money. But I am a guy, and I never spend money on myself. He just makes me feel bad for wanting to spend money. Like I should keep all of it for a rainy day.

is it the entire carpet or just floor mats?

do you know how much labor it takes to take out an entire old carpet and install a new one? plus you'll have to purchase adhesive, probably take out the seats, etc...

No, he isn't. But he absolutely loves his Trans Am. It's really nice, and really fast. And he dumps alot of money into it. I have a older Firebird. But I love my car too. It's nice for it's age, and decent fast. But his dad
bought it for him.

If it's a situation where this is something you can easily afford, and you really want/need it, buy it. Don't let someone make you feel guilty over a little thing like this, it's not worth it.

No, it's molded. No adhesive is necessary. And I have taken out my carpet several times to put down sound absorber, to reduce rattling in the car. It takes me about an hour to get the old carpet out.

May'be I should get it, and not tell him. Because if I tell him, he will just rag on me about wasting my money.

If you're not broke there's no reason to really have to check with him. Come on now, you're your own person so make a decision and stick to it:)
