How did Clark Kent get away with wearing a white dress shirt?

The white dress shirt would have totally given away his leotard especially the giant red S on the chest.

And one more thing, did he just tuck his huge red cape into his slacks?

You must have missed the original shows where he would change clothes and not wear them under I think.

Answer me this then. Do you think Clark had the forethought to wear a two piece leotard suit instead of the one? I imagine if it were just a one piece, he'd probably would have had cut a hole in the backside of the onesie which would explain why he wore the red underwear on the outside.

Little know fact: Everyone that worked as The Daily Planet was blind. That's why they couldn't see through the shirt and that's why they couldn't notice that Superman looked exactly like Clark Kent other than the glasses.
