How did Chertoff escape blame for Katrina

Lemon law

Lifer
If one quote perhaps best summorizes the US governments inadequate responce to hurricaine Katrina is perhaps "You are doing a heck of a job Brownie."

Within a week the bush crony Brownie had resigned in disgrace----and all were content to
leave Brownie the scapegoat.---and all feeble attempts by Brown to rehabilitate himself
was met with derision-----although Brownie kept feeding at the Federal trough.

Yet Brownie had an immmediate boss----Chertoff of homeland security who was Brownie's
immediate superior-----and Chertoff more than Brown was responsible for delivering the
army reserve vehicles and resources needed to operate in a flooded city.

If nothing else, Chertoff should have realized early on that Brown & Fema were faltering and taken charge.-----which he did not.

We must remember homeland security is what will be relied on for relief in event of a terrorist strike.--------can we trust Chertoff if he failed in what amounts to a dry run.

How can Chertoff escape a fair share of the blame in the Katrina Fiasco?

It was Chertoff, not Brown, that had the sole authority to initiate the federal response to Katrina, and it is upon Chertoff's shoulders where the blame should fall. The Washington Post did an excellent article on this, which was almost totally ignored by the rest of the national media. It's an excellent read:

Chertoff solely responsible under existing law for starting federal response to Katrina

The Brown story was just too sexy for the average journalist (and hack in Congress) to ignore. He had a pathetically laughable background for this job and then issued his poor me emails during this crisis. A better fall guy couldn't be scripted.

The essential fact remains though, that the Katrina failure has not been effecitvely addressed at the federal level and we are likely doomed to repeat it.

The whole situation with Katrina is extremely sad and for the U.S. should be criminal on the part of our Government.

Katrina clearly shows the U.S. is no longer the United States of America.

It has been sold out to the highest Foriegn bidders.

You have to be here to believe it.

Debris is still everywhere and not moving anytime soon. The bullsh!t story from our Government that they need permisssion to remove the debris is an absolute travesty and disgusting.

There is still no power even to many parts of the area.

I don't even have the words for this, it just should not be this way here.

I am completely NOT surprised. The Bushies hate government and their plan was and is to screw up government services so they can use the screw ups to get people to end them.
It is not only their real plan but the STATED plan of neo-cons.

Two things to consider -- One: The Bushies consider FEMA an entitlement program, similar to welfare, and systematically moved to gut it as it was incorporated into Homeland Security. Two: New Orleans is a Democrat strong-hold in a sea of red across Lousiana. I obviously can't prove that they consciously decided to ignore the unfolding tragedy in N.O. because of their political allegiances, however it only takes a brief look at California to understand how the Bush administration plays favorites.

I shudder to think about the lack of federal response if California had a major earthquake.

Dave, it is NOT the resposibility of the government to clean ANYTHING up. The Fed's responsiblity ended at rescuing people and even that is debatable because constitutionaly they don't have that authority. It's pretty fvcking sad that people think it's the Fed's responsibilty to clean their homes and cities up when a dissaster hits. The FEMA efforts are life safety (to save people) and to rebuild infastructure, NOT to clean up debris and fix people's homes.

Yep, cities are capable of handling disasters that affect several states without any aid from the feds. States too.

Didn't you hear? The cities and states hit by Katrina were begging for federal assistance, the feds were on TV talking about all the help that was on the way, only it didn't arrive until five days had passed.

 Typical Rich Republican response while folks with money like you had their neighborhoods with Jaguars parked out in front picked up spotless.

So the rest of the non-rich should be living in squalor according to Republicans. Cute

The federal government isn't your personal insurance agent. They are their to help fix the infastructure, nothing else. Your bullsh!t about other people having more than you is pathetic. You have a serious case of class envy that has nothing at all to do with the federal governments responsiblities. You being poor doesn't entitle you to the government bailing you out. You aren't entitled to anything in life dave, you need to accept that and work to better your posistion in life yourself instead of relying on the government to bail you out.

I bet you wouldnt mind the govt sending an agent in to wipe your arse.
Why dont you take the initiative and clean up your own city instead of crying about it on an internet msgboard?

What does it feel like to have such hopelessness and despair in your life you are required to suck off the tit of our govt?

visited the gulf coast last week to see a relative and could not beleive the progress that has been made in the last month. still a very long way to go. and they could use more of the money promised them. but instead of crying and moaning, they roll their sleeves up every day and work to get themselves back to normal. and they will get it done one day. they usually go through a hurricane abt every ten years. now the projects that dave is talking abt. they were destroyed before the flood. and they will wait for the gov to help them again.

That post had no real content, and instead was a diatribe based on envy and jealousy. What's your point? People with money can afford to get thier stuff fixed...wowwww how horrible.
