How did Apple succeed in Tablets (ie: iPad) when everyone else failed miserably?

Much better to go to the home office where I have a decent dual monitor setup and proper dvorak IBM Model M keyboard Can read as much as I want while also updating my netflix queue or posting on a forum...

Anyhow I used a laptop as an example since I have a cheap used laptop, it's only got an old p4 CPU.... but it costed $80 + cost of ram and hard drive, has a 15inch screen that can handle 1400x1050, and can store 160GB of data.... For the price of an Ipad, I could buy like 5 cheap used laptops (that perform quicker than an Ipad and will run windows xp)

Also I can plug an IBM model M keyboard into my laptop and run it in Dvorak mode

I value my time too much to spend more than a minute on that laptop...

His point are all pretty accurate actually. Try going to a park and reading a book on an ipad, vs a laptop. You'll see how much harder it is,reading on the laptop vs a tablet style form factor.

If I go to a park to read a book, it'll be with an actual book. If I took an $500+ electronic device, I'd take a laptop so I can do something else if I get bored. Like put in a DVD or play a real game or browse the web. I like doing so on a laptop because a laptop does everything I need, not just a few things I need.

Every single use for an iPad I've seen people say they like seems like nothing more than a stretch -reaching for such a tiny niche to fit the iPad into and then they defend it as if they couldn't possibly live their lives until the iPad was invented. Oh please.

FACT: All non-apple tablets failed in the market, just like palm pilots and PDA's. You are incapable of recognizing there currently there are other devices which do what tablets were meant to do, but do it better, and with a less overall cost of ownership. Whether it be a general purpose device which does a whole lot more for about the same cost, or does only one specific thing for a very small cost...

Tablets would be useful for is IF the DID do real computing:
Any and all forms of data entry and retrieval: Doctors Offices/Hospitals/Emergency Care, Traffic Citation Stops / Arrest Records, Financial/HR records...

Once corporate adoption occurs, costs can drop enough for an en masse home segment.

I think it's hard to justify an iPad when you can get an ultraportable laptop for the same price that does a hell of a lot more, has good battery life and doesn't take up much more space or weigh much more. Is a < 3 pound laptop really that much to carry around?

you could argue that you could do "a hell of a lot more" with accelerators/gyros/touchscreen that you don't get with an ultraportable.

Actually I don't think that you could. What can an iPad do that a laptop doesn't have an equivalent application for? I'm not trying to say that tablets are useless but I would never buy one. I've toyed around with one at costco but it just wasn't for me especially at its price. (I was using a Galaxy Tab BTW)

I have seriously come to the conclusion that there are no upper-middle class+ people in the world that hate the iPad.

Almost everyone above that says they would never buy one, would have to choose between rent or financing it for over a year.

Even those without a need are not blind to it's benefits.

It's always a freaking riot though seeing someone with a 17" laptop struggling on a plane.

It's not like iPad is the only successful tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab did well and that's why they're releasing another Galaxy tablet very soon. If it did poorly they would rename it something else.

I have a PC too but it only has like 6 (very important) reasons for it's existence.

No heat in your lap while watching movies for hours, able to hold it like a book, able to slide it into a purse or a small bag.

My wife has a 13" Macbook Pro, she brings the iPad to her work. When we are in the car, she brings the iPad.

She reads tons of online magazines, watches japanese TV and shops.

She also has an iPhone4 she will use for just movies at times...reading magazines is harder.

She will work on her Macbook if she's sending out a ton of emails, has Office work to do, or wanting to stream to our TV (which is pretty rare with the quality of the built-in screens).

People laugh about Apple FanBois...but seriously most out there would not be buying a $500+ device if it was a POS. Apple has had duds the market has skipped buying. The iPad/iPhone is hardly a niche market to just fans, it was created a ton of crossover customers...many that have no desire for anything else Apple.

The best analogy for me in regards to a tablet is that it is to desktops/high end laptops what a microwave is to a dedicated oven/range.

A microwave doesn't replace an oven. But it's a good supplement for one when you need something reheated, melted, defrosted, or cooked quick. It turns on instantly and you have hot food very quickly. It doesn't have the control of an oven or the ability to cook a wide range of foods. But for it's designed purposes it's much more convenient.

That's what a tablet is. It's an instant on, easy to use device that works well for it's intended functions. It's not a replacement for a full desktop/full function laptop but for many people it works very well for the casual needs that they require of it.

FWIW, I'm not home right now or I would watch them on my home theatre. I could spend the time and move videos to my MBP or convert them to throw on my iPad. OR, I could take my iPad with me and not have to worry about what videos I'd like or anything like that. That's cool to me.

I don't know many wealthy people right now that don't have an iPad or more at home...many don't always have iPhones but many will usually have a wife or kid with one. I will say many of the Droid (even Droid X) users wished they got the iPhone4 like other family members did.

The rich are hardly cheap, they just usually don't have a need to go blow $200k on car like everyone expects them too or be decked out in $5000 outfits for day to day wear.

I know many families that have 4+ smart phones, iPads and laptops for each in the family. Yes, that is out of reach for many people to do, just the 4 data plans alone.

I don't qualify all poor or rich into a statement, but it is pretty clear when someone's financial ability is really the limiting factor and people hate to admit that. I am one to call that out.

This can be easily seen in the way many poor people vote in spite of themselves. Voting is so rare today, but leave it to someone raping welfare, with a handicapped placard they don't really need to make it to the polls to vote against welfare benefits and handicapped stickers all meanwhile bragging about doing so.

I have no problem with those that don't have a need for a device, but when people are so adamant against a device it just smacks of jealousy. There is no denying that the tablet device, esp. the iPad has a major benefit over even an ultraportable laptop in many situations...anyone that can do so is ignorant, trolling, and/or pissed they can't have one too.

It's no different than Joe the Gas Station attendant swearing if he wins the lottery, he is not quiting his job, buying a new car, or clothes. He will usually go on record for something like "gonna get me a trailer and my own piece of land".

Seriously, it's $500 people, not $5000. You know you CAN have a laptop AND an iPad, right? It's not like it has to be either or. I have a laptop and plan to get an iPad 2. MUCH nicer to use casually than a laptop, ESPECIALLY on a plane. Using a laptop on a plane is just way too big and bulky to pull out and use during a flight (even a 13" laptop). An iPad is also nicer for me to use on the couch and while traveling in the car on trips.

If I want to do some serious work and need the power, I'll use my laptop. When I'm just doing some casual surfing (which is most of the time), the iPad is better.
