How dangerous Milwaukee?

I may have a job opportunity in Milwaukee WI, but I recently heard that it's getting kind of like Detroit, so I figured I would ask here to see if anyone has been there and can describe that aspect first hand.

I just want a general idea about this stuff. I could possibly get a decent tech job in the city, and I'm getting married soon so I would basically be starting a new life there if everything worked out right. But I dont want to end up hating it if I go there.

My friend told me that his brother's wife lived there and hated it because of all that stuff. I imaging that things are better in the more maintained and bigger city parts, but I really dont know anything at all.

I'm just looking for some friendly input about this, so please be helpful.

Thanks.

I was born there, it is nothing like detroit. There are bad areas like any major city but if you live one of the nicer areas it is fairly quiet.

Definitely depends on what part of the city you're in. The east side is pretty nice.

Having grown up in the Milwaukee area, I'd have to say that it's a lot better off than Detroit, and that they seem to be going opposite directions. While Detroit seems to just be getting worse, there have been a lot of urban renewal projects in Milwaukee in the past several years. Sure, there are still a few bad parts of town, but even the downtown area is a lot nicer than it was back when I was in high school 7-8 years ago.

Not to mention, if you're talking about the suburbs and such, instead of the city itself, there's not really too much to complain about.

The solution to ease your concerns is don't live in Milwaukee.
Live in the burbs and commute.

I would suggest living south of the city as the south->north commute is much less crowded than the north->south.

I haven't been to Detroit, but I don't think Milwaukee is as bad...

Like others have said the suburbs are the way to go...

List your interests and where you plan to live... and what you like to do daily / weekly.

Someone from Milwaukee will surely tell you if you would hate it or not. Then again, any big city is diverse enough to find daily enjoyment from.

I live on the South side of Milwaukee, it's nice. Quiet neighborhood, only thing that sucks is the nazi street parking regulations. Its nowhere near as bad as whomever you spoke with made it out to be. You're fine if you stay out of the north side of town.

Thanks everyone; I really value all the input. I probably would live in the south or north south just because it seems like it would be easier to travel upstate that way.

Any more input? I am eager to hear anything else.

Random google of crime rate had this site as the first hit... put in milwaukee and detroit, seems pretty close:

http://www.bestplaces.net/crime/?city1=5553000&city2=2622000

Madison (where I live) is 4, 5... and it's pretty safe.

NyC is slightly safer, according to the completely arbitrary ranking scale of site above.

Score another victory for random web sites of completely unknown reliability.

I like Milwaukee a lot and visit there when I can. But I don't think it's a "Safe" city by any means. I feel safer walking around in Manhattan than in Milwaukee. I really like the brady/prospect area and thereabouts, though.

I worked EMS, Emergency Medical Services, for 5 years there and have friend who still work down there. Not too bad. North Central and South Central are the worst areas. You can find bad apples anywhere but stay South side for living it shouldn't be too bad.

Remember, just like any larger city, suburbs are just a short drive away. I would live down there without a problem.

I was born in Milwaukee, but live in Kenosha now (about 30 minutes south of Milwaukee, on the border of IL). Depending on where you live now you may have to get used to cold winters. I'm not crazy about winter, but I love living a few blocks away from Lake Michigan.

Our property taxes are the worst in the nation according to a recent study. My wife and I can't stand the taxes anymore and are constantly talking about wanting to move but we have too many family ties here to leave. The city is nice to live in if you stay away from the areas where mostly black people live. Sounds racist but it's the truth. There are lots of suburbs of Milwaukee that are part of the city but on the outside parts of town. We have many cities that make up Milwaukee County and they are all within 15 from the center of the city. Think of it as a big city made up of smaller towns.
