I've heard of people stealing Geos by lifting them away.... but only rumors in NYC

well, in NYC they'll steal ANYTHING.

I hear there's a lot of people kidnapping and stealing organs..... is this true?

You know all those hot dog vendors on the street corners? ;)

you will die if you crash, but the upside is they only go 5 MPH so you stand a good chance of being able to bail out if you see a dangerous situation coming up.

Check this out, my friend took his brother's ride (Geo Metro) for a ride back to my apartment to get some stuff. This commute involves getting on 95 N headed towards Franklin Mills. On our way back home, we both felt the car slowing down. Then a weird noise and then smoke from the hood. I looked over to the dashboard and the oil light appears. I'm telling him to pull over and he says he's gonna try to make it home. Engine was fried and we ended up calling AAA. Ironically as I'm on the phone with AAA, a AAA truck pulls up only for him to say he was here for someone else and thought we were them. He was nice enough to tow two cars, but my friend ended up sitting in his car on the flatbed while the other ppl's car was being towed and they got to sit in the front of the truck. I left with my friend who came by to see what was wrong with the car.

Crappy car? I can't say, but we've had our shares of problems with this car.
Uh, any car will do that if you run it with no oil. :p

Oh, and for 100$.. If it runs and drives, fsck yeah!

Provided you aren't taking very congested roads on a regular basis, AND this isn't a permanent car, I'd say get it for $100 and drive it 'till the wheels fall off and the engine catches on fire.

Of course, if you're going to buy a Geo Metro anyway, might as well go all the way and get the 3-cyl, huh?:p

Really, it's not a Geo Metro specifically that I want. My criteria are:
1)Cheap. <$1500 or so.
2)Decent mileage. >30MPG preferrably, however if the car is fun enough I can lower that a bit
3)Not a very common car. I want a car that isn't boring. Diesels, forced induction, etc. are welcome.
4)Must be manual.

I've considered turbo dodges, the Metro, old Mercedes diesels, Merkur XR4Ti, maybe a VW Rabbit...

XR4TI's are fun cars with lots of nice options, but they cost a ton to fix when things break. If you are lucky enough to find a salvage yard with one on the lot you may be able to scavenge parts but they are pretty uncommon.

No. They're not. Even the Shelby Omni was a big POS. Trannys were the worst. I had one and went through 3 trannies in 6 months.

This one time, at band camp...
