How crappy is the 6800gt now?

Just curious, how bad is this card? It's what I've had for a while and im trying to figure out how far behind i am haha. oh, btw, whats it priced at now? and what cards would you recommend that are decent but cheap?

I had planned to upgrade about a year ago, but then realized I had no money and that I would rather buy other stuff, and that games started sucking big time, and that I didnt really have use for a really sweet computer (like this was when I built it). Also, i kept on deciding to wait for price drops, new stuff, etc...which is a dumb game to play haha. Basically, I had no need to upgrade like I planned. And so...here I am. I'd like to upgrade relatively soon though.

But current PC gaming just blows. I'd like to eventually play oblivion at max settings (sad that im still thinking about that hah).

looks like yours is really sweet...lucky.

Don't feel bad, I'm still running a 9700 Pro. It was bleeding edge, top-of-the-line-nothing-was-even-close when I built this rig in late 2002. Since then, I've only upgraded the CPU slightly, and the RAM. I could run anything there was completely maxed out, smooth as silk.
Luckily, like you, I don't have a big need to play any current FPS games.

Then again, my rig won't even run Doom 3, Far Cry and Serious Sam 2 acceptably....still have those and haven't played them.

If you built your current system, your looking at a pretty cheap upgrade. You already have windows XP, a good enough PSU and case which is non-propriatory, and probably have a good DVD burner. Something like this would OC to 2.8GHz easy enough on stock cooling (luck here) and can take a future penryn in a year when the OCable low end chips are selling for $70 and hitting 4.5GHz.

A-DATA 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model ADQVE1A16K - Retail
$58.99

ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
-$10.00 Instant
$20.00 Mail-in Rebate
$89.99

Intel Dual-Core E2160 Allendale 1.8GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E2160 - Retail
$83.99

Subtotal: $232.97 - $20 Rebate= $212.97

After that, I'd hold a few weeks and get the 8800GT for around $250 initially or an 8600GTS if you want to stay under $130. You'd find games a bit nicer, though I tend to agree games currently being released lack any creativity or soul. Personally hoping Age of Conan pans out.

I wouldn't call it crappy, I would just call it dated.

Agreed... It is still faster than a lot of gaming laptops out there... Plus, it is still higher end that a lot of people have. Still, you are due for an upgrade.

the 6800gt is slower than a 7600gt. which is also already old.

a 2600pro (an xt obviously even better) probably even would be comparable to a 6800gt at this point.

i think a lot of games are probably still easily playable on a 6800gt, so its not completely on its last legs, i would assume tf2 would run fine, and starcraft 2 next year should run easily on that ...

funny ,i didnt know poeple were looking forward to age of conan. i've never really looked into it, but i know a guy who used to work where i do now, that worked on that. i think it went gold about a month ago, i just heard stories of them basically living at their office to get that done.

I have one as well and am waiting for the 8800GTs to come out so I can consider them for an upgrade...card works well for what I do with it but I know it won't last much longer with COD4 comming out.

I was using my vanilla 6800 until a few months ago.

Crappier card than your GT, but it ran like a champ for 3 years until I got a 22 inch monitor.

I just got a used 6800, and it can't run any of the newest games at my monitor's native res (1680x1050), even with all the settings turned down. If you're only looking to play slightly older games it should do fine. Just depends on what you play, and how much it'll cost you, I suppose. I got the 6800 for $35 so I'd say it was worth it.

The 6800 GT is going for about $30-$45 USD on Ebay.

What are you looking for, PCI-E or AGP?

Also what model and make is your power supply? So we can see what it will support.

My 6800 GS has lasted me awhile and still runs most of the latest games acceptably on medium settings. I do want to upgrade to the 8800 GT when it's available, though.

My 7800GT was starting to lag for my needs. Especially when I got myself a 20 inch WD LCD. My 18in samsung CRT was not cutting it anymore. I like high levels of details on current games because I find it hard to get back on console games right now (except for sports games). So I got myself a 8800GTS 320MB for about 300 dollars. Yeah, the damn thing is huge and it might cause a few over heating issues if you don't have a good case for it. Mostly because my motherboard only has on 16x PCI-E slot and it resides right on top of the northbridge HSF unit.
