How crappy is 768down/128 up for cable internet?

I didn't really see a specific forum for this question, so here goes.

Cutting back on costs and considering moving the cable internet speeds down.

How bad is 768kbps down / 128kbps up?

Or 1.5Mbps down / 256kbpd up?

I think I'm on 7/384 right now.

I don't do online gaming and won't use Xbox Live until expenses aren't as much of a concern. I don't download huge files or bittorrent much. I just need consistent access and most of my net access consists of e-mail and web browsing.

TIA!

Yeah it should work great for web browsing/email, it'd just be painful if you were doing a lot of downloading.

Also it might work alright for gaming as well, as long as the latency is low.

You use it? Page load times are okay? I don't want to go to a laggy speed where page response times are shite.

I don't use it but I had 1.5mbps DSL at one point which was fine for browsing and email. I can't imagine 768 would be much worse for browsing all but the most video heavy websites.

Kilo Bytes or Kilo Bits. Those always confuse me. 😱

If it's Kilo Bytes, that's pretty good. Kilo Bits, not so much.

Thanks. Maybe loading Flashblock would help too and only enable it for sites where I need the flash/etc.

Technically one of the rates I referenced is Kbpd - Kilobytess per day.

Aaahh, typos.

Kbpd is kilobits per day...

Anyways, 768 will be fine for web browsing and email.

Download a bandwidth limiter application and see for yourself.
How many people are using the connection at once?

IMO for web browsing 1.5/128 is okay, and 768/128 is probably okay too.

edit: get Flashblock - if yo need a flash element just click it.
Also get Adblock for firefox and HOSTS file for system overall:

Two people at most, usually not very concurrently. GF only does e-mail, web browsing, YouTube, etc. as well.

Also download a DU Meter trial version and see how much BW you actually use for youtube, etc. Bandwidth limiting application (there are many) + bw monitoring should give you a decent idea.

It's more than fine for what you're doing. The only time you'd notice anything is if you were sending a large E-mail, then overall browsing would be slower, less responsive.

you are worrying for nothing.

we have an option here for 500k down called Ultra Lite. I use a 7meg down package. My cable modem one day defaulted to Ultra Light speed. Surfing the net was no problem and the difference was hardly noticeable. Downloads and online gaming is where I found out that something was wrong.

But for all around surfing and stuff, the lower speeds are just fine.

My mother has a 768 connection and it works just fine. Hell, browsing on an ISDN line (128) is just fine for browsing the net and email.

No ISP's use KB (kilobytes) when they refer to their up and down speed....it would be like a car dealership listing the cars RWHP instead of BHP. It just wouldn't sell. ...and I am referring to the majority of the general public who don't know any better 😛

I thought bandwidth was always Kb and Storage was KB?

using 768/384 DSL and it works fine for me

if I want to do any huge download, I do it overnight

I primarily play games and browse the Internet.

when i first set up our office network the most the owner would pay for was 768 dsl. it was slow shared with 20ish computers, but it was definitely stable. we didnt have a hard time with larger files, and i could even play the occasional online game during work hours. i even hosted a ventrilo server for a while. id say if you dont play serious games online you're ok with that speed.

I have a 1mb down/256kb up line, and it works fine for anything/everything I need (WoW with the wife, EvE on weekends with vent up, downloading, email, etc).

Yeah you need to adjust a touch, but for me I looked at the savings of a lesser connection.
