I hate what our Government does in third worlds, but I recognize that if they don't do it, someone else will.

The Middle East has oil, and so we went for it.

As it is now, all we have to do is NOT go to war, and let them sell us crude for a good price.

we have a history of proping up despotic regimes that benefits us in the shot term but comes back to bite us in the ass. we did it in cuba before castro and other central and south american countries.

Maybe that is the answer.

Instead of war, take over their Government. Insure that Oil payments get to the people, rather than ending with Government or Cleics.

This could work in Africa, too...

This thread is on topic, maybe you should post on topic?

I started a topic about how we could improve elections within the United States. You've been posting for ...two pages now...about starting a war to wipe out the middle east.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see the connection. If we try to conquer the world, we best be ready to handle the world's problems. Since we do a pretty crappy job from my standpoint handling our own domestic issues, I really have no desire to see us try.

Or, you know, we could start putting genuine effort into finding alternatives to oil, and stop being the Saudi's bitches.

I don't think the two party political system is all that bad. In many countries, too much political fragmentation leads to stasis, as the government tries to appease everybody by doing nothing. That, and political extortion - smaller parties selling their votes for their sectorial good, and against the greater good. It happens all the time in other countries.

Think of the US political system as a shit filter: rough shit goes in, smooth shit goes out after vast filtering.

Anyway, the nicest solution would be granting the states additional independence. Over time, states will take evolutionary directions until they are differentiated enough, and population will shift accordingly. California could ban heterosexuals and gasoline operated vehicles, for example. It's very difficult to do such massive shifts on the national level, but on the state level it will easily work.

Establish minimum federal requirements from the state - in terms of debt, for example - and have the US act like a a more homogeneous European Union. Have the federal government support the weaker countries through development plans, just like in the EU.
Then it'll be a truly wonderful nation, with everybody finding their spot eventually, and much more dynamic, community oriented politics.
