DVDs on TV screens 'appear' crisper than on monitors? Try it out yourself...

1. Play a DVD on your PC monitor
2. Pop the same DVD on a set-top DVD player on a TV (be it regular or HD)
3. Compare.

Colors seem more vibrant and edges look far more crisper and sharper. It's something blatantly noticeable imo.

I've noticed this over multiple monitors including my old 17" CRT, my 19" Samsung LCD and my current 21" Acer widescreen LCD.

Why is that? Is it because TVs use scan lines thus giving an illusionary sharp look?

DVD's are in 480i. Monitors have over twice as many lines of pixels as the DVD outputs, giving the blurry look. TV's have 480 lines of pixles, making it look better.

Educate a noob please. 480i means what.. 480 x ???

What I noticed is that when I play HD stuff, they look quite crisp on my monitor. 1080p means.. 1080 x ??? That's still less than a standard LCD monitor resolution (1280 x 1024).
