Yea, the Sowers, thats a GREAT college mascot. Wow.

Indians are annoying. So the college mascot is named after them, big deal. Consider it a tribute to the Fighting Sioux warriors in the past.

btw...if they really thought every freshman would take 'required sensitivity courses' and take trips to all the reservations.....

I'm not a member of the Sioux nation and if I went to that school I would not want to be called a Fighting Sioux. There are thousands of alternatives.

Your argument doesn't compare to just about any other college. I'm sure the folks at the U of Florida have Gator blood in them. Or perhaps they like eating Gator tails, I'm sure that's on the application, isn't it? Maybe they just raised 'em. What about Notre Dame? Are they Irish? Et cetra ad nauseum.

edit: OK, I guess we all beat the sh!t out of that point. :D

UND History.

Edit: Looks like it's been the Fighting Sioux since the 1930s. The previous nickname, you ask? The Flickertails. Yeah, let's go back to that.

No, it makes you an idiot.

By that rationale, anyone who was born in the states and has lived here all their life is Native American, and they have the right to decide what the school mascot is.

Native American refers to where your ethnic ancestors originated.

Your mother is 100% German. You are therefore of European descent.

I think times have changed and since they are offended by these nicknames why not just move on to something less controversial. Retaining place names is one thing, Having a major institutions nickname for its students is a whole other matter.
In fact another institution in ND just dropped Skoal as a sponsor because of its image. In fact if I were a student at that school I would resent the Fighting Sioux name myself.

So just change years and years of tradition and legacy because a few people are exhibiting knee-jerk offense to a nickname? I find it especially funny that they complain about the logo...which was completely designed by a Native American. And why exactly would YOU resent this nickname?

Well for one thing I'm not Sioux. What do the Sioux have to do with the legacy of the University of North Dakota. I would bet there are far more Germans attending that school than Sioux. But I agree, the people making a stink are being stupid.

Neither am I. The nickname itself has become an institution for the University. You wouldn't change Notre Dame's nickname because of it's drunken Irish mascot, would you? I'm positive that there are many more Germans than Sioux attending...but they don't get the free education that the Natives do.

Yes that is correct. I don't know who has the right to name the school mascot

Native American refers to where your ethnic ancestors originated.

How far back you want to go to determine"ancestors". Do you see where this can go.

He clearly said ethnic ancestors, so we're not talking about homo erectus.

My school's mascot is the Tiger. I'm not a tiger, but I don't have a problem with it.

You don't want to be called a Fighting Sioux? Then vote with your feet and your wallet and DON'T GO THERE.

Tigers don't have a say so that is a good nickname, Rams don't have a say so that is a good nickname, Eagles don't have a say so that is a good nickname, bears don't have a say so that is a good nickname....

Unfortunately he doesn't get to make some arbitrary cut-off point to support his argument. I mean are you saying I am fundamentally wrong in claiming I am a Native American. I was born here and have lived here all my life and I am 52. By his logic I could say a kid 20 years old is not a Native American because i have been here longer. Look Indians didn't originate here they got here before me, in the same way I got here before you.

You know, the funny thing is, you ended that sentence with a period. I'm guessing that was a statement, and not a question?

Hey dude, I've got a final at 7:00 so I won't be here much longer anyway, I'm just looking out for your own good, because you look more foolish with each post.

I'll ignore your asinine stupidity, and shift to further shoot you down.

If everyone born in America is a Native American, then technically the Sioux tribes don't exist anymore, they're just Native Americans along with the rest of us. Therefore, why should they give a sh!t if a college is named after their distant relatives that by your logic don't matter anymore?

Ha...you lose again.

hoooooooooooooooooooly crap... you realize that if this statement were true, "native american" would be the largest "ethnicity" in the entire united states? wow.. i was actually thinking you might have a point, and was wililng to read on, but now, i don't think i will... i, as a native american that is 100% chinese, am offended by your statements

I'm hoping, for the sake of your argument, that you made this post ironically. Otherwise, the ENTIRE premise of your argument was just negated, by YOU!
