How come?

Why would a largely white run institution in a largely white state want to use an indian name for their nickname? I mean ND is a largely agricultural state and could surely come up with something else and less controversial, like the Sowers or The Reapers, Midwesteners...anything. Why put themselves in this position in the first place?

Just saying because pretty much everything in North Dakota is named after something Native American, and they have a very large (compared to the rest of the country anyway) percentage of Native American population. Dakota itself is a Sioux word.

That's my school. The University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux is a good, unique nickname. The names you suggested are pretty lame.

I wouldn't call it a very large percentage. And they're generally clumped in reservations and the surrounding areas.

Yea, the Sowers, thats a GREAT college mascot. Wow.

Indians are annoying. So the college mascot is named after them, big deal. Consider it a tribute to the Fighting Sioux warriors in the past.

btw...if they really thought every freshman would take 'required sensitivity courses' and take trips to all the reservations.....

My impression is that the various tribes have absolutely no pride in their ancestry, who were the SIOUX, a FIGHTING TRIBE.

I never took any sensitivity sh!t, and those assholes can't make me.*

*I mean, like I really need it.

My mother was a Native American born and bred in North Dakota and she was 100% German. I think times have changed and since they are offended by these nicknames why not just move on to something less controversial. Retaining place names is one thing, Having a major institutions nickname for its students is a whole other matter.
In fact another institution in ND just dropped Skoal as a sponsor because of its image. In fact if I were a student at that school I would resent the Fighting Sioux name myself.

They merely represented alternatives man, i new they were lame when I posted them. That isn't the point. Are you a member of the Sioux nation? Why should a student who has no Sioux blood in them be called a Fighting Sioux? I would resent that. And Indian nicknames are anything but unique.

Your mom was a Native American that aws 100% German? I am not sure anyone understands your rant. Every city I've been to in So Cal has hispanics as a minority (maybe a large population, but generally a minority) but every street is in spanish. Obviously, because of the spanish missionary influence. What's the big deal?

I'm not a member of the Sioux nation and if I went to that school I would not want to be called a Fighting Sioux. There are thousands of alternatives.

So just change years and years of tradition and legacy because a few people are exhibiting knee-jerk offense to a nickname? I find it especially funny that they complain about the logo...which was completely designed by a Native American. And why exactly would YOU resent this nickname?

My school's nickname is the Dragons. Am I a descendant of any dragons?

Your arguments are weak. The fact is, certain Indian groups are the only people that seem to whine about college mascots. Like someone else posted, you don't see the Irish whining about Notre Dame.

My school's mascot is the Tiger. I'm not a tiger, but I don't have a problem with it.

You don't want to be called a Fighting Sioux? Then vote with your feet and your wallet and DON'T GO THERE.

I am a Native American I was born in the US and have lived here all my life. Am I not a Native American? This isn't a rant. I was just wondering why a school in the current climate wouldn't just avoid this kind of controversy and choose some other nickname.

How long have they had that nickname? I'd guess a long time.

btw I bet I could drink many more beers than you.

Why would a student who has no Knight or Trojan or Eagle or Rocket blood in them be called that? I resent that. I didn't say general Indian nicknames were unique...how many other teams are called the Sioux?

I don't know where you go/went to school, but did anyone call you by your team name? "Oh, there goes a Trojan!"
