How come XP won't install?

I finally got XP, and wow, great, I can't install it!

To my knowledge the installer is very similar to 2K's, at least up to a certain point. Problem is, at one point in the install, before any reboots of any sort, it stops. Where the 2K install would continue, the XP one just stops! It's after the first part of copying files... just stops there and won't continue, can't exist can't do anything, have to reset. It's not frozen as I can use caps lock or scroll lock or whatever.

Any suggestions... Everything else installing 2k and using programs in there works perfectly.

One idea for you. If you have an integrated sound card try disabling it in the CMOS. Load Setup Defaults and try again. Hope that helps ya.

It's been disabled ever since I got my SBLive.

Where does it stop exactly? After you reset it attempts to continue but remains "stuck"? Is it the part where Windows is installing devices?
I would try removing all cards, except video.

i had this problem also, following some forum (watch too many) I had gone to msconfig (through run) and under the start up tab had unchecked MSMSGS
the very first box listed. Im using win 98. This was supposed to help it load better. When I went to load xp, I saw the the word messenger just before it stopped and froze like yours. I went back and enabled that box , reloaded xp and it worked. I still cant load it cause at the very end of loading it says I have a hardware conflict. HIGHPOINT CONTROLLER. They are the hd controller from the board I took out a week ago. I cant find where those drivers would be stored since I installed a new MB. So Im sitting here twidling my thumbs waiting for the answer to my prob. Hope you get yours going.
