How come we name our kids after they are born?

Why not name them while they are in the womb? That way, we can stop referring to it as an "it" or "that thing" and instead refer to it by name.

Some people don't want to know the sex before hand. So if you name your kid Tiffany and its a boy oops.

my wife already had our son's name set in stone many months before he was born. She also goes on and on about what our next child's name is going to be... and she's not pregnant.

She is, of course, a woman and is thus crazy.

On a side note, a friend of mine and his wife don't want to know the sex of the baby until he/she is born, but they call it "Carlos" 😉

With our first child, we were told it was a boy, until she was born. Could have made naming odd if it were set in stone before hand.

We named both of our kids while my wife was pregnant. Some people choose not to know the baby's gender until birth. Everyone is different.

Our son didn't give us much choice as to whether or not we wanted to know as he was proudly displaying his manhood during an ultra-sound. For our daughter, I got a little too practical and told my wife I wanted to know so that we could figure out to do with all my son's baby stuff before the new baby came.

Why name them "right" after they are born? If we instituted some sort of "coming of age" ceremony in which the child is given their legal name at around the age of 12-13 or so they might end up with a name that actually reflects the kind of person they are. I think that would have far more meaning than the "tags" we give them at birth now.

I wanted to meet him first to ask him what his name was. I figured since I had a year to name him I could try out all the ones I had in mind and see his reaction. Thankfully it only took 2 weeks before we got the green light.

Who does that? Almost everyone I know names them beforehand - they pick out a boy and a girl name, or multiple. I've only met 1 or 2 people who don't check the sex beforehand. I don't really get the idea of having it be a surprise...you gotta paint the baby room, your wife has to have a baby shower and get clothes, so it'd be super lame to have a boy and have all pink clothes from the party lol.

thats what nicknames are for. they are earned. we had names for all 3 of our kids before they were born, they all have nicknames as well. both seem to fit them tho, i think its cool to see how they adapt over the years.

This is true. Many of us would all ready have a name picked out. Most of us have a name picked out for our kids before conception let a lone pregnancy.

We still have to decide which member of the confederacy to name our child after.

all of them. Robert E. L. J. E. B. S. T. J. S. J. J. D. W. W. JDub02

(the W. W. is woodrow wilson, because he segregated the DC school district and is therefore an old confederate, even though he was 10 when the war ended)
