the movie theaters reign of terror is about over. no?

Not everyone has a projector, or heck even a plasma or OLED! Some don't even have surround sound, I have seen it. Not everyone has the space or budget for all that stuff.

The theater model has a long future ahead of it.

Uhh, drive-in theaters with fully reclining bucket seats?

First thing I thought of was my full sized '74 Chevy van that had a bench all around the interior and the "seat" in the back that was 5 feet front to back (two could sleep across comfortably and two more could sleep on the side benches). I backed it in a few times and my girlfriend and I watched laying down.

You don't take a date to a home theater and even the best home theater doesn't compare to IMAX.

It's easy to understand how they stay open in major cities like New York. Small apartments are not conducive to decent home theater setups. But in the burbs where everybody has a 50" screen and a DVD player or high speed streaming, I simply don't see how it works. The theater experience sucks, eventually they're going to go the way of the arcade. Home video games got good enough to kill arcades and home theaters are plenty good enough to kill public theaters. It's surprising that it hasn't happened already.
