<<So far I've encountered only two true horror movies (unless I'm forgetting something), those are Ring and Session 9.>>
I just watched Session 9 based on your recommendation, mto81. So how exactly is this movie, as you say, a true horror movie?
I was pleased that it didn?t rely on tired old clichés of the genre, i.e. something jumps out making everyone in the room jump but it turns out to be just a cat. But on the other hand, perhaps it could have used some of those scare tactics because I didn?t find it scary at all. It was a good suspense that unfolded in such a way that the viewer didn?t feel as though he had been led down that road a thousand times already, but it did not contain any frightening elements. Those images that seem to impress themselves in your mind and stay there after you?ve watched the movie. It failed to rouse my fear or even creep me out.
Anyway, I wasn't able to find Ring yet, but I look forward to viewing that one too someday. I think one of the best horror/mystery films I've seen is
Jacob's Ladder. As the review on that page says it has some of the most psychologically terrifying images ever to appear on screen. Those images kept appearring in my head and creeping me out for days. Of course, many music videos have borrowed these images and techniques so, as the reviewer says, they may not be as jolting now as they were eleven years ago. I also liked how it was not only a fright movie but a thinking movie as well. You'll be scratching you're head about that ending!
