I mean there are some good ones, like american werewolf in london/paris, and Silver Bullet, But they haven't really made a good really Scary one, least in my humble opinon. I think they are all to overhyped with Vampires and whatnot. I'd really like to see a good scary Werewolf movie not for the faint of heart.

It's not easy to make a genuinely scary movie. 99,9% of all the crap they market as "bone chilling horror!!!" is only suspense at best and something like Scream and especially Blair Witch Project at worse (in the Top10 worst "horror" movies ever).

So far I've encountered only two true horror movies (unless I'm forgetting something), those are Ring and Session 9.

Look at the Thriller video. Even if the werewolf stuff doesn't scare you, Michael Jackson sure as hell will!

If you know the American Werewolf in London movie you may remember the 'say knock knock' joke from it.
Some guys walking through thick mist:
'Say knock knock'
'Why?'
'Say knock knock!
'Knock knock'
And at that moment the werewolf jumps out and attacks.

A few guys who had a huge German Shepherd used to do that, walk around in thick mist, and when they heard someone approaching they'd do the 'say knock knock' thing, with the German Shephard being trained to jump out after the last remark and scare the hell out of people :)

It's difficult to make a true horror movie. I thought the original American Werewolf In London was a good horror flick but perhaps it had too much comic relief in it to be considered a true horror movie.

Also, horror is really subjective to the person watching it and the impact of horror films are definately moderated by the age of the person watching it. What would scare the crap out of you as a kid might just provide a moderate thrill as an adult. I remember the movie The Blob scared the piss out of me as a child but I would just laugh at it now.

I think the original Nightmare On Elm Street was a great horror flick, the original Alien was sci-fi but stands out as a horror flick as well and John Carpenter's The Thing falls into that same category.

House, Evil Dead, Hellraiser, Children of the Corn, Misery... it isn't that hard to make a decent Horror movie.

I have to admit, House was one weird movie. I remember first renting it back in the '80s :)

Werewolves are old hat: They're just guys who turn into wolves during a full moon.

Ginger Snaps is a really good werewolf movie. If you pick up the DVD make sure you get the Canadian version. (The US is Pan & Scam, and has no special features)

Check out Dog Soldiers

Its the best werewolf movie I've seen. Its not scary as such (well I didn't think so anyway), but I found it really good because it didn't take itself too seriously. It's pretty gory too.

Some of the one liners in it had me in hysterics.

How can you get Dog Soldiers? It's not listed as being on DVD or video.

FWIW, "The Wolf's Hour" by Robert R. McCammon is a GREAT book, but not a movie. ;)

It's just been released over here in the UK in the cinema, so it'll be a while before its out on video or dvd I expect.

I've probably read 40 werewolf books and that is by far the best one sofar.

Strieber, Whitley "The Wild", Cadnum, Michael "Saint Peter's Wolf", and Borchardt, Alice "The Silver Wolf" series are about the only others that come close.

<<So far I've encountered only two true horror movies (unless I'm forgetting something), those are Ring and Session 9.>>

I just watched Session 9 based on your recommendation, mto81. So how exactly is this movie, as you say, a true horror movie?

I was pleased that it didn?t rely on tired old clichés of the genre, i.e. something jumps out making everyone in the room jump but it turns out to be just a cat. But on the other hand, perhaps it could have used some of those scare tactics because I didn?t find it scary at all. It was a good suspense that unfolded in such a way that the viewer didn?t feel as though he had been led down that road a thousand times already, but it did not contain any frightening elements. Those images that seem to impress themselves in your mind and stay there after you?ve watched the movie. It failed to rouse my fear or even creep me out.

Anyway, I wasn't able to find Ring yet, but I look forward to viewing that one too someday. I think one of the best horror/mystery films I've seen is Jacob's Ladder. As the review on that page says it has some of the most psychologically terrifying images ever to appear on screen. Those images kept appearring in my head and creeping me out for days. Of course, many music videos have borrowed these images and techniques so, as the reviewer says, they may not be as jolting now as they were eleven years ago. I also liked how it was not only a fright movie but a thinking movie as well. You'll be scratching you're head about that ending!
