Well because underpants aren't usually made of a strong enough material to withstand vehicular weight, impacts, or wenches thrown in the works, monkey or otherwise.

Well, it's either that or because it wouldn't be fair to the elephants.

Probably has something to do with the pillars and the height, and that people buying minivans generally want that extra rear cargo space.

I personally don't like hatches at all, especially not on sedans that come in both hatch and non-hatch versions. I know people appreciate the extra space, but I don't like the look, and never agree when someone says x or y car looks better as a hatchback than a sedan with a trunk. I do think there are plenty of cars that look okay as hatchbacks, just not better. It's not practical for all vehicles to be fastbacks, but that is what I like best out of all the design configurations, though you usually will get less trunk space than something more practical.

It's a matter of preference, though. It's like preferring, uhh, a very large derrière on a woman on not. :D

Because a trunk on a vehicle that large is a giant waste of space.
Station wagon, hatchback, SUV/crossover.

Trunks were added to cars as a place to hide bodies. Vans already have plenty of body storage.

Two primary reasons:
1. Vans are a very small segment of a huge market. When you consider how many vehicles are manufactured (models) in the US market, there are only 7 or 8 vans. Making a move to differentiate among those few choices would be a risk no manufacturer is willing to make.

2. Vans are made to maximize cargo space for the vehicle. They have removable or stow-able seats. Removing the option to load large objects from the rear of the vehicle defeats the purpose of this traditional cargo option.

The big thing though is what difference does it make if you're dealing with a rear door vs a trunk lid? Some vans have a very deep storage compartment in the rear that actually provide more storage than most sedans...this is especially so with the hybrids using that space for battery storage. If you're worried about things flying around back there, you can get a cargo net in most models.

The designed weight limits for how much a minivan carry aren't much higher than for a car. Most of the space behind the front seats is for children. If you have adults back there you shouldn't be carrying lots of luggage. If you want to take lots of adults with luggage you should get a full size van or a bus.

Why would I want a minivan that I couldn't carry large boxes with the rear hatch closed?

I drive a minivan and I laugh at short-bed pickups.

Need 4x8 plywood or drywall? No problem, slide it in, close the rear door no problem. Need 10' long boards? No problem, slide them in between the front seats, close the rear. Need some 12' pipe? Slide it in onto the dashboard and close the back.
