F-16 are not really high tech, more like mainstream
http://rt.com/usa/news/obama-fighter-jets-egypt-856/

Compared to what exists in many countries it's a competent plane. Turkey still uses the Flying Brick.

I see the article was written in mid-December and much has changed. Theres also a lack of threads about Morsi's heavy handed approach to suppressing opposition to the effective dictatorship created by the Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi himself. I think that shipping any arms to Egypt at this time.

Did you notice that Egypt already has 200 F-16s? Obama outrage not found.

This is standard operating procedure for the military. Sell or give our future enemies advanced military hardware, then act surprised when it comes back to bite you.
Then of course you need new, more advanced aircraft like the F-22 or F-35. Oh yeah, the price has gone up of course. The new ones cost over $300 million per airplane.
Maybe we could drop gold bricks on our enemies, it would be cheaper.

When have we gone to war or any conflict that we have confronted weapons (other than hand held) that are stamped "Made In USA"?
Rifles, missiles, grenades and mines are out there, stolen and,/or resold. I do not think you will find anything that is not hand carried.

Since the Pentagon buys weapons for foreign armed forces like Egypt’s, the cost of those penalties — which one senior official said could have reached $2 billion if all sales had been halted — would have been borne by the American taxpayer, not Egypt’s ruling generals.
The companies involved include Lockheed Martin, which is scheduled to ship the first of a batch of 20 new F-16 fighter jets next month, and General Dynamics, which last year signed a $395 million contract to deliver component parts for 125 Abrams M1A1 tanks that are being assembled at a plant in Egypt.
“In large part, there are U.S. jobs that are reliant on the U.S.-Egypt strong military-to-military relationship,” a senior State Department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity under rules set by the department. In deciding how to proceed, the official said, Mrs. Clinton and her colleagues “were looking at our overall national security goals, as well as any domestic issues.”

this is an "interesting" read as well

Isn't that great? Obama trusts a middle east dictator with weapons more than us. Nice

Such is the price of peace with Egypt. Think of the savings; had Israel been allowed to mop the floor in '67 or '73.

Would Egypt behaved and still gotten the Sinai back? No longer a leading Arab power, would they have tried?

Left the Sinai as an open un-ruled area, occupied by the natives

No weapons smuggling into Gaza,

Link...or were you just hypervetilating??

Presently, Iran is the only country that has "advanced" US manufactured weaponry who is actively hostile to us. And that weaponry is essentially grounded plus outdated.

Pakistan would be negligible concern, but they have India to concentrate on.

You also do not see planes, ships, armour, AA weaponry defecting to an hostile country.

Avionics and electronics are more important than the airframe anyways. I'm sure the radar and etc are old enough to not be a major threat.

Simple formula: We give them something, they give us something back in return.

As far as gifts getting stuffed back in our faces, well, take Iran for example. Under the Shah's rule we armed Iran with really nice fighter jets among other things. They need constant maintenance and repair. When things turned on us there, we simply stopped giving them those spare/replacement parts and upgrades. And as far as I can recollect, those Phantoms and Tomcats are still sitting/buried out there in the Iranian desert.

Besides keeping American factory lines flowing now this move also reinforces US as Egypt's main supplier.
They do not want them to risk approaching Russia or France.

Give a plane and they build a whole doctrine around it.
In other words...give them a few planes and then they purchase billions in supporting equipment, upgrades over the years.
We're a good crack dealer like that.

Many will get all but hurt because "Oh noes...we are giving murican stuff to muslim and they gonna hitlerize the Israel" but the fact is Egypt won't do shit to Israel.
the economic impact would devastate Egypt. Egyptian trade with Israel and Egyptian trade with the US.
Even if they wanted they couldn't. Their military may be fine for taking on their own countrymen but they lack the training and Jedi mitochondrians to take on any modern force.

As for the F-16's, they are block 52 versions of C and D models. All fine capable aircraft in the hands of an airforce where solid training and lots of air time would make it an effective component of the armed forces.
In Egypt hands, they are effectively target drones. At most they could probably use them as attack aircraft.

I can understand the desire of right-tighty conservatives wanting to keep all Arab countries in the stone age because "Brown Muslim+brown president=conspiracy" and how all Jews would like to keep their neighbors sanctioned, embargoed squity eyed-pointy fingered at because "lulz".
However, this deal is fairly typical of how we keep the arms market in our pocket and how we strong arm folks in the UN (over things like trade deals and treaties).

Egypt's been getting billion dollar handouts and debt forgiveness since Bush Sr.

A collection of main stream fighters is a big deal? Really?

Exactly. The planes weren't really gifts, they were tied to billions of dollars in future support and maintenance contracts flowing to US military corporations. The former shahs phantoms/tomcats were used in the decade long Iraq-Iran war.

Janes says they are well maintained. Where is your info coming from?

As far as I can tell in action Morsi has been mostly playing by the rules. He has a tough political tightwire act in that he basically represents the Muslim neocon faction of his country. It'd be like if Romney had won and had to someone maintain strong ties with Palestine, while giving himself cover with the pro-Israel fanatics here

There are no threads because the POS and his partisan hacks dont want to talk about this, Just look how little replies there are

obama has no right to do this its American tax dollars being wasted and being given to the country ruled by the mb

Its funny how I was warning everyone about the POS obama and his links to the mb and everyone called me crazy and a racist yet here we are and obama is doing this

As long as you control the flight and weapons system software, you might as well sell them F-22s.

A plane not taking off the ground or not locking on what you choose is an expensive toy
