How come SSE is not detected on my Athlon 4 processor?

I have an HP laptop with a 1 ghz Athlon 4 processor. How come SSE isn't recognized in SSE enabled programs? I found a little software tweak or something that forces SSE detection and it works, but I have to use the tweak everytime I start windows and I don't think I should have to? Does anyone know what's wrong?

I dunno for sure, but it could be that the BIOS wasn't written to accomodate the SSE in the chip and that the utility you run was written to overcome the BIOS's shortfall. Where did you get this utility?

Another question would be, is the utility for enabling SSE in Windows only, or does it enable SSE for all apps that can use SSE? Windows Media Player doesn't recognize the SSE in an Athlon4 or AthlonXP without being tweaked, is that what this utility is for?

If you are manually starting the utility everytime you start Windows, just put a shortcut to it in the Startup folder. That way Windows will always load it automatically when it boots.

Athlon 4(a.k.a Thunderbird) doesn't have SSE capability.

Athlon 4 is not a Thunderbird. It is the mobile version of the AthlonXP, or if you prefer time consistency, the Athlon XP is the desktop version of the mobile Athlon 4.

athlon 4 is the xp, what are you using to see if sse is dectected or not? are you using Wcpuid? if you are and its not listed i would bet that the bios isnt updated enough.

Athlon 4 does support SSE. It's the mobile Palomino. I've also got a 1GHz Athlon 4 (HP) and SSE is detected and works great. Video encoding and the like absolutely flies.

Pabster - what model HP lappy do you have? I have an XH485. I updated to the most current bios and everything but still not working for me. Also what version windows are you running? I'm running WinXP pro.

No...Jerboy....Athlon 4 is not T-birds. I can assured u tht. Its an Athlon w/ the palomino core....like they all said...a mobile palomino CPU. We called it XP for desktop.

I updated the BIOS to the most current bios available for my laptop, and WinXP still isn't enabling the SSE instructions. I use the wcouid program to enable the sse detection on the comuter, but I have to do it everytime I start the computer, and kinda wish there were an easier and more permanent way. Also, what would I have to tweak in WMP8 to get it to use SSE instructions on my AMD processor?

when i upgraded from my 1.2 thunderbird to my 1600+ XP, i was told that in order for windows to accknoledge the SSE was to reinstall. i dont know how truthful this was because i got a new harddrive and had to re-install windows 2K on it anyway.

Um guys, since Markolc is using a laptop, the BIOS in all likelihood probably
supports all of the processor's features. Knowing that, I would suggest to you
that the programs that you're using were probably written by hacks who have
no idea how to code SSE detection functions properly.

What programs do you use other than Microsoft's Media Player? (MS software might
be suspect)

WCPUID doesn't detect SSE until I "enable it" through the wcpuid menu. I also use PowerDVD and that doesn't detect SSE until after I enable it through WCPUID. Also another utilty called cpu-z doesn't see SSE till I enable it. WinDVD don't get it till after enabling it. It sucks.

OK, I finally ended up reinstalling my OS and now all is well. SSE is detected finally without any "tweaks". But now I want to know how to tweak WMP8 so it uses SSE like it's supposed to. Are there any guides to enabling the SSE in WMP8 available? Thanks.

I'm not sure about media player, i know for media encoder you need to change the string "genuine intel" to "authentic amd" in one of the dll's. I think there is a patch that will do it. Anand mentioned it in one of his articles on palomino/athlon4/althlon xp.
