I think it's because they are technically paid for their time. Whatever happens between consenting adults on the job is up to them.

Don't tell me you are one of those who thought Michael Douglas was really banging Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct.

Because they don't paid taxes.
Similar to why it is illegal to go down to Chinatown and gamble, but it is perfectly okay to go to casino or purchase lottery tickets.
Another one that is hard to explain is the different between drug stores & drug dealers, or loan sharks & banks.

drug store: other than viagra you're almost always paying way too much for something you don't really want
drug dealer: you know you're paying way too much but you almost always come back and the free samples are always high quality

bank: default and the bank takes your stuff
loan shark: default and they take your stuff, kick your butt, and then expect you to pay what you owe plus interest

Porn is protected under the concept of free speech and self expression. Next time you pick up a prostitute, bring a video camara and say you are making amature movies, and you are all set.

I know what the vice squad will say, "you have the right to remain silent, if you give up this right . . ."

Ok, if it's because of taxes.. then why is it still not legal to setup a regulated prostituion ring where taxes are paid

It's because of 'morals', not taxes.

Prostitution should be legalized and state-regulated in all 50 states. Church people be damned. :p Half the people that get rounded up in prostitution stings are "good chuchgoing folk" anyway.

Legalize it. Regulate it. Tax it.
