Really? Give me an example of Europe or Asia's "superiority" in technology.

broadband infrastructure
fibers
cell phone systems
internet usage
tv standards
security standards
public transportation
phone system/ISDN standards...

these just off my head..sure i can list far more thinking longer about it...

example 1) (i can only speak for germany up-to the year 2000 [thats when i left], from where i am, but i also read AMAZING stories especially about Asia especially when it comes to broadband)
) if you ordered a phone in germany you *automatically* got ISDN. (64k as opposed to 56k ISDN standard in US)/ Was at least the case for me and my roomates. The whole phone system got a overhaul and is digital now...no analog sh!te anymore as to my kowledge.

) broadband (copper ?????) was burried already in the 80s...at least where i lived...i am noit sure it might actually been fiber. There was big discussion going on YEARS ago already about the new fiber-optics cables...as said this was already in the 80s when they started putting cables in all/most houses in bigger cities.

) tv standards.

I dont know what happened to D2-MAC and PAL2 (quasi enhanced PAL standard, i THINK they discontinued it in favor of HDTV or wher still debating which one is better etc ?)
Quite sure the scene there is much more advanced ? Anyone enlighten me because it would interest me too 🙂 How does it look HTDV-wise ?

Still use this as the car phone
Best reception eVar!

I don't understand why people lay down so much money on cell phones. The tech is still evolving. I'll only lay down some serious dough when the phones are, small, can do good quality photos/videos, play mp3's, dictate, have good games, browse and chat online well, and is RELIABLE with good reception.

The new Blueberry is getting close, but too bulky.

I just always pickup a new phone with contract renewels.
This is my current phone, it's OS sucks.

oh and the reason verizon phones suck is because most manufacturers prioritize the development of GSM phones since it's a bigger market.

Other features are often disabled (tethering bluetooth with your laptop to get online) with verizon, so i'm not surprized that their phones also lack memory cards. I"m not very familiar with cdma...all i know is that verizon sucks and i'm glad i'm on a GSM network. Quite a few GSM phones have memory cards, and soon the Nokia 6230b will be released for cingular, which will support up to 512mb for mp3 playback.

verizon sucks unless you live in the middle of montana. 🙂

Soon my ass...the 6230 is out! Check Cingular.com to see if it's in your area. I think the website's backordered though. I'm still debating between that and the 6620.

you really have to see Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore. and Shanghai to understand. They're about 20 years ahead of us...

They may have adopted this things, but where we're they developed? Where were they made possible?

It's a freakin' phone. WhoTF cares as long as the reception is ok.

For once I agree with EA:beer:

And I'm agreeing with both of you. I still have an analog Motorola flip phone from 1992 or so. I can make calls to and recieve calls from the same people everyone else can, only difference being I can actually wedge mine between my shoulder and ear while writing a note without worrying about it getting lodged in my ear canal. 🙂

As long as it's a flip phone, I couldn't care less what it looks like or what it does beyond allowing me to make and receive phone calls. My phone is beat to hell.

*Flip phone because I don't like having to lock my keys, or the phone calls I accidentally make when I forget to lock my keys.

And this is why, cel phone usage in the USA is lower than that of Japan and Western Europe - it just isn't as popular so ppl don't care what they look like.

i.e. - I got my phone for free when I signed up 3 years ago - battery is still alive and good reception - why should I buy another? Because I need a camera, PDA, or mp3 player built-in - I don't think so.

Haha, I have an amusing image of someone walking around with a vibrating and flashing ear now 😀

wth? why is this still being discussed?

America - you buy the phone (compensated with contract) and contract together...

Rest of the world - you buy a phone and cell plan separately.

Cell companies can't afford to hand out 7610's for $200 with contract, so they lower the curve on what is "cutting edge" by selling a year old v600 instead.

ALL OF THE PHONES available in Europe/Japan are available here. Just make sure they use the right frequency (1900, 850) and you can order them off of ebay or online vendors.

When these phone manucfaturers release their phones...they don't go out of their way to make sure Americans don't get them. If you have the money...go ahead and buy the phone you like and quit complaining.

Err, I got a contract with free phone. I bought the contract, the phone came with it, and was free.
WTH are you on about that we buy a phone and plan separately? Unless you mean we configure the plan and phone, and then they come as a package.
In the UK, you decide what contract you want, and then you usually decide what phone you want to go with it (some cost, and some are free, the price depends on the price of the contract). You get phone and contract as a package together, but you get to choose both, and the phone is often free.

Why should you buy another?
I had a contract with Vodafone, it came with a phone, then I found a better deal elsewhere, and went to cancel my Vodafone contract.
Instead I switched Vodafone contracts and got a new phone, the phone was free. I'm not down any £££ and I have a new phone. (My old phone was FUBAR though, it turned itself off randomly, and had piss poor support for games etc, useful when you're a student 😛)

If I want a cool looking cell phone, I'll take a candybar phone, but it, and insert the guts into an old AMPS phone.
