How come nobody here talks about Presler?

For aound $335, it is a very good deal. Surely there are people here interested in the price/performance ratio?

A quick search reveals very little topics discussed on Presler.

Thank You!

Well, Presler still runs fairly hot, and most people are interested in gaming performance which AMD still dominates in.
I'm not sure if $335 makes the 3ghz presler a good deal with there are dual core opterons and athlon x2s cheaper...

Presler is nice but like above poster said... new 165 and 170 Opterons are hitting 2.9+ on normal cooling. Even a presler at 4Ghz bows down to that.

This board tends to be very AMD centric.

That said, the low end Preslers are a decent value IMHO because they are relatively cheap, run cooler than their predacesors, and are decent overclockers.

In "most" cases the AMD offerings will be faster in the same price range however.

Im taking up for the 920 in a different thread so you know im not too biased towards AMD. If we were talking about mobile chips Ill jump on the intel bandwagon all day long. I cant wait to see the new AMD mobile chips that a rumored though.

Presler runs a lot cooler than smithfield, but so far there has been no luck overclocking to 4ghz on anything other than the $200 P5WD2..4ghz is where it will start to surpass a 3800+ X2 oc'd to 2.6ghz..IF somebody can get it to OC to 4ghz on an inexpensive motherboard, then it will be the best bang for the buck. So far, with 4 differant motherboards, the highest I have gotten mine is 3.7ghz, where it just barely starts to catch up to my X2 @2.618ghz.

I like my presler. I don't like bumping the voltage up, so I keep mine at 3.75 and it idles at 28C. I bought my 975 board in the hopes it would run conroe, but after all is said and done, depending on the voltage regulators and what gigabyte can pull out of their @ss, it may or may not.

Preslers are supposed to see a price drop soon, so you may want to wait a few weeks to see what the prices do.

I'm not all that enthused about Presler, but I am very interested in what the conroe is going to bring to the table. I may have to move from my X2 4800+ to a conroe if it's as good as what we all expect.

Preslers are the tualatins of today. Theyre just here to test out the 65nm process and be replaced soon afterwards. Only difference is, tualatins were awsome performers, preslers are mediocre.

Im ready for Conroe too.

I'm ready for reviews first 😉

All indications points to that Conroe will be excellent. I just read somewhere that clock for clock Conroe will be up to 20% faster. That's exciting news but I must reserve judgement until good reviews come out. Then of course everything must be reserved thanks Intel's marketing hype. If Conroe can surpass AMD's Brisbane next year in efficiency, then I will probably upgrade my current HTPC w/ P965 and Conroe.

As far as Presler, it just doesn't impress me. Regardless of speed/performance, netburst architecture's inefficiency is a big turn off. Especially when it's competition has a significant lead. On top of that, current prices gives AMD a better bang for the buck. When you are the best of both world, you should be the favorite which the Presler is not. A perfect reason why knowledgables of Anandtech is overwhelmingly AMD friendly. If Intel and AMD swap products, then this board would be Intel friendly of course.

Well at least both cores are working on my new Presler, but not having good luck overclocking it. I have the new one running at 3.43ghz(245x14) on my Asus P5P800 SE, it wouldn't post past 228mhz FSB on my new gigabyte 8N-SLI board, but my P4 ES is running at 245mhz FSB on that board. Not going to try it on the P5LD2-VM, since I have to overclock the PCIe bus to get it going on that board, and it makes my graphics go all outta wack.

Why go cheap on a mobo anyways? makes no sense to me.

You are quoting the Intel Press Release...I agree with Rich, let's wait and see what the reviews say first

In what exactly? You need about 4.2Ghz Presler = 2.6 Ghz X2/Yonah

Check the autoGK thread, at 3.7ghz, the presler was slightly ahead with version 1.86, and slightly behind with version 2.26 (which was slower on both of them). The Presler was slightly ahead in Pov Ray as well, but only by about 1.5 minutes, while being way behind in cinebench. I expected it to need around 4.2ghz as well, but it was a lot closer than I though at 3.7ghz. But it seems the only way to get presler to 4ghz+ you need a $200+ motherboard, so it's just not worth it, I should have just waited a little longer till the desktop boards are available for Yonah, although they won't be cheap either.

You read that at Cnet who was told by an Intel representative (who btw claimed that it will take AMD 2 years to catch up...) Go figure. Lets wait for reviews, shall we? 🙂

I went pretty cheap on a mobo. I guess thats why. Whats the point on saving the money on the cpu if you are going to blow it on the mobo and ram to overclock.

Exactly! Doesn't do any good to get a CPU thats $40 less, if you have to buy a motherboard that costs $100 more to be able to overclock to the same perfomance levels...so unless there is a $100 motherboard that will take Presler to around 4.2ghz, the 3800 X2 is still the best bang for the buck.
