How come no one blames SUVs for high gas prices?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it basic supply and demand? Part of the reason (how big a part, I don't know) for increasing gas prices is the sheer amount we as Americans have been using for the past decade+. How come we don't blame the folks who drive 9mpg vehicles?

Even the most patchouli smelling hippie doesn't blame high consumption for high gas prices. What's the deal?
 
This topic has been exhausted many times. All vehicles including SUV's use gas. You can't blame SUV's for the high prices exclusively.

I filled up my non-Hummer a few days ago. $77. Basically ANYONE with a truck (not an SUV, those have pansy tiny gas tanks to give the illusion of saving money) does.

I think what the OP is trying to say is that SUVs use more gas to do the same job that a smaller car can but using less gas.

heh. not when you have an SUV with 4 people in it hauling a trailer, and the back stuffed.

but yea, that doesnt happen that often.

and in all honesty SUV's dont get THAT horrible MPG, father averages 19mpg in his avalanche after 50K miles. most cars will average 23-25 id assume.

I don't blame China at all; just mentioning that it is a contributor.
 
If you wanna blame SUVs, you also gotta blame the super cars, the sports cars, and sporty (but not sports) car, and then pretty much all the other cars that are sold in america. Compare the mpgs of cars in the US and Europe, and you'll see what i mean. (can't find any stats on it now)
 
Sure... but that's only a small fraction of the equation. To begin with, oil doesn't follow the normal patterns of supply and demand, thanks primarily to OPEC. Second, people that drive larger vehicles carry the extra cost burden. You also seem to forget that a vast majority of oil in the US and world in general is used for other things besides automobiles. Even if everyone if the country drove hybrids that got some 45 mpg, little would change. Although I can't locate a primary source document at the moment, I believe this would only reducle annual oil consumption by 3%. In other words, blaming SUV drivers is much too simple, especially for such a complex issue. I'd even venture to say that its a sign of complete ignorance.

I didn't say that cars are the only use of oil. I even inserted that I don't know the amount that increased demand from half a country driving SUVs influences fuel prices. 😕
 
Yes, they should be part to blame. Them and the evil chinese people bringing their economy back.

but then at least the sports cars are fun to drive. SUV's are only good for plowing into other cars and killing the people within.
 
so if they never had sports cars with horrible MPG - does this mean the gas prices would've been much lower to begin with ? Quality logic !
 
Let's see...factors contributing to increasing prices:
Increased demand because of suburbification in the US
Increasing realization that supplies are dwindling
Political instability
Greater numbers of vehicles (just as bad if not worse) in developing countries
