It depends on the movie, a standard widescreen movie is 1.85:1, which will fit exactly fit your widescreen tv. Other movies, lots of epic movies, such as LOTR will be 2.35:1, so you will still get black bars in order to fit the whole movie on your screen.

As said above... but also make sure the DVD player is set for 16:9 too.

I tried Spiderman 2, Rounders, and X-2 and they are all 2:40:1 or 2:35:1. I don't think I own any movies that aren't super-wide. Gar.

Try comedies, they are usually 1.85:1.

More and more movies are shooting in the 2.35 format nowadays, almost all actions movies are.

Are you absolutely positively sure that you have a widescreen tv?
I laughed at first, but that's a legitimate question. :D

Heh, yes I'm sure. I just picked up this bad boy:

Didn't have too much to spend, but I swear this has definitely one of the best, if not the best, looking pictures of all the TVs in Bestbuy/Circuit City

Your watching the movies on your dvd player, right? Check your DVD player options, if the bars are fairly big, I'm pretty damn sure that your running in 4:3 mode.

No...as he stated he is watching 2.35:1 and 2.40:1 movies. This is exactly what happens
