How come I can't write to my SD card when it is inserted in my card reader?

When I try to delete images off my SD card, it tells me it cannot delete because the disk is write-protected but I know for a fact it is NOT in the locked position.
Nor can I copy files onto the card.

Card reader is a cheapo FIC USB 2.0 6-in-1 reader from hot deals.
Camera is a Canon SD10, SD300 (multiple models)
SD card is a Kingston, PNY, Canon, doesn't matter.
File properties shows that it is NOT read-only, or hidden, but it is archived.
OS is WinXP SP2

The camera can write to the cards just fine.

dude..my reader does the same thing..

When I stick my card in with the write protector NOT on, it comes out halfway. Its like the reader has some "safety" feature so it pushes the write protector a bit, to keep you from being able to write.
