Yes, it's that time of the year again: November elections. I got my absentee ballot in yesterday, and sure enough:

Proposition [ 34462N15 ] - let's throw money into another money pit by adding one more parcel tax. Yay. All in favor? Approved!

I say, either tax everyone, or set up a qualification: only those taxed get to vote. Why should I pay for the leechers in my county who rent an apartment for the sole purpose of getting into a good school, while I have to actually pay for that school?

Let's have everyone pay, by passing down the tax from landlors to tenants in a form of a yearly addition to rent. I'm sure the voting results will change after that.

The property taxes are already ridiculously high, and adding another tax on top of it doesn't help.

the money you pay to make the school better and the community nicer drives up housing values, the renter doesn't get jack while you make 8-15% per year on your house value, much higher if you live in states like cali or ny.

renters pay property tax every month, they give the money to the landlord and he sends it in for them 2X a year

while it does seem like homeowners get screwed. it is not as bad as you make it out.

though renting a 2 bedroom 1100sq ft apartment is 500 a month. so 6k a year. for the same size house taxes are nearly $3500 ...

I actually agree with you 100%. But my solution is not to eliminate voters because 100% enfranchisment is a necessity. Instead, get rid of property taxes completely. They're unfair in the extreme.

OK, using your rant as a basis...why do I have to pay school taxes levied on my property? I have no kids living at home. I'm being taxed for something I can't/don't use....

Yeah, I actually understand the process, and am NOT really bitching about it, just using it as an example to counter the OP's whining...

Renters may not be taxed directly, but their landlords are, and they pay that to him in monthly installments...called rent.

Heh, as long as they raise the military enlistment age to 21 as well there'd be at least some support for it.

Paying for school is a weak complaint. The benefts will come back to you in many forms. While you may not be receiving an immediate and direct benefit, you do receive many long-term and indirect benefits.

I guess I don't understand the logic that if someone pays taxes they gain the privilege to vote. Not everyone is as blessed as you and has enough money to pay taxes.

At the same time, I agree with you that we are taxed way too much, to feed a bloated government. Just the other day I was watching a documentary about the income tax. Before it was enacted into law, there were strong debates on whether or not the constitution shoudl be amended to allow no more than a 2% income tax. They finally decided not too....know why? Because they felt there would be no need to; when would the income tax ever get higher than 2%???!!

One of the selling points for the amendment was that it was a way for the rural states to stick it to rich north eastern industrialists. When originally implemented the vast majority of citizens were not affected by the income tax.

Why does it matter who lives in the house as long as taxes are collected for said property?

If you think the rent that renters pay to appartment managers/owners/whatever is to cover the cost of everything BUT the property tax, you're nuts :) If the appartment complex or whatever has to pay more in taxes now, you bet your bottom dollar that the next person to sign a contract is going to have to pay more per month than the others who are already on leases.

Are you trying to be funny, or are you really that stupid?

Homeowners pay taxes.

Landlords pay taxes.

Renters pay for their landlords taxes through paying rent. You don't think rent is higher in an area with high property taxes?

Just because renters don't get a bill stating that part of their rent is for tax, it is a given.

If a bill is passed to raise property taxes, the renters will feel that, trust me...

a homeless person doesn't pay taxes... why shouldn't he vote?

we both live here and the actions of the elected officials impact us... so, why can't we have a say in what happens?

Puerto Rico doesn't pay taxes and they get to vote and have US Citizenship.
