I have had the HD2 for 3 weeks now and also have a 3g iphone.
I've followed some of the tips to optimize the HD2 and it run alot smoother than the 3g.
Especially surfing the web through wifi, the experience is beyond anything the iphone can do.
This is on an outdated OS Window mobile so I can imagine what it would be like when the EVO is on Android.
2 things I don't like about the HD2.
- THe apps suck.
- The music application is very lacking and I like using my phone for music.

Does Anandtech not allow image link to imageshack ??

Yea browsing on the HD2 is really impressive. On wifi, there are some pages it loads faster than my laptop.

I have spoke to 3 Android owners directly about this. And not a single one could explain why them rooting their Android is fine and dandy but me having to JB my iPhone was the worst shit in the world. I would imagine a good number of Android owners are all for Rooting and totally shit in Jailbreaking. I can't assume the 3 I talked to were the only 3 who have zero logic. One of them actually chuckled when I told him how I JB my iPhone to put a theme on it. This was a minute after he showed me his Android theme, which I'm guessing he had to ROOT it to use.

the irony is sweet.

Been a longtime iPod user and used a 3GS for a bit before passing it off to my parents. Android feels completely crippled without a root/custom ROMs. And when the Droid first came out, people swore that it was the best thing since sliced bread, but it's more like that it was the phone that finally gave VZW users a real phone. It's not fast at all, and you have to OC it like mad to make the experience decent. Makes you wonder how a Droid Eris runs so smoothly on an ARM11 processor. I can only install like 10 or so apps and I'm down to 20mb of free space. Oh wait, I gotta root to use the SD card. Sigh.

Also a lot of the bashers who love to hate on multitasking talk about how they can do this and that, but to me there's only several things that really need to multitask:

- Audio (MP3s already do taht on the iPhone), so they're adding streaming audio now
- Downloads (if you want to download a file and step away), or web browser loading.
- GPS
- Notifications. You can either leave the app on or use push notifications. Apple chose push.

Other than that your phone is a 1 app at a time device. You can't put apps side by side. Even if you wanted to it's not practical on a 3.5" or even a 4" device. That's what computers are for. Plus it's not like you can interact with two apps simultaneously that easily anyway. Apple iPhone OS 4.0 brings about much needed multitasking, but it's not like you need full blown multitasking on your PCs to get functionality out of your smartphone.

regarding multitasking, apple does have the main ones covered in OS 4. this is assuming instant messaging is covered under the data connection / notifications. having gtalk always on on my phone is a killer app for me on android.

i found another fun use case for multitasking: pandora in the car + trapster running in the background to warn of speed traps :)

edit: wasn't this thread supposed to be about touchscreens? :D

well, i just read that the new HTC phones coming out have moved to an upgraded sensor that doesn't experience this issues the nexus one does:

people always turn it into JBing and rooting :D

As an Android user I wish we had push notifications not just on Voice/Talk and Gmail. I'd like it for IM or perhaps some social networking apps. Of course this requires Google to either open up the API they currently use for push and/or provide push servers.

am i a minority being happy with my winmo 6.1 resistive touch screen samsung phone? maybe im just not expecting enough, but it is pretty fast overall going from program to program, i can switch out from a number of programs before ill hear a hiccup in the music playing. i guess i just do get what people are gooey over on the iphone experience. i thought it was ok, but not mind blowing in any way. so what if the screens flip without a pixel going out of place? by the time your brain realizes there was a minor pause its already over, and a moot issue. now, if my phone took up to a minute to start an app the first time id be really pissy abut it, but i havent found a program yet that takes more than a couple seconds to load and be usable.

edit: google maps takes up to 20 seconds to load sometimes, not really sure why.

the pinch zoom is probably more user error than anything. I never use it unless some iPhone nut wants to see it.

But now I'm thinking about how much greater it would be with a 1ghz processor.

DAMN YOU NERD OBSESSION!!!
