I find that Buffalo's probably closer to the Midwest ethos more than anything else. It's a pretty laid-back city, especially when you venture out into the suburbs like Amherst and Williamsville. Even the large university (SUNY Buffalo) is actually in those two areas. While it qualifies as a city, it more resembles a large town when it comes to the landscape and people.

I live in Buffalo. I don't think it has much of a midwest feel at all. You can definitely compare it to other rust belt cities in the great lakes region, though I'm not sure about "midwest". I don't think "midwest" is very defined either.

I'm not sure how you quantify "canadian". We love hockey here in Buffalo and have a good amount of snow. Buffalo, southern ontario and rochester are all very similar. The culture is definitely regional.

On a side note, Buffalo is a "pop" town, end of story. Maybe the residents of Genesee county got caught up in the hustle and bustle of a NYC like lifestyle. 😀
