how can you test your own FPS?

i was wondering if there is any program out there that I can use that shows me how many frames per second I am running so I can tweak my card to its top performance?

there has to be, right? how do they get the fps when they do reviews?

they use benchmarking programs like Quake3 timedemos, 3dmark 2k1, UT Thunder.dem and others.

they don't have a benchmarking program but you can use the command line and type in something like "/cl_showfps 1" and it will display your FPS.
