How can you make a widescreen dvd display as fullscreen on a widescreen TV?

I have a dvd player on the way. in the main time, I have a 16:9 widescreen that's hooked-up to my ps2 component source. But whenever I put in a widescreen (matrix reloaded, for example), it shows in 16:9 mode instead of full screen (on the widescreen tv). I told the ps2 to display widescreen (then fullscreen), but neither one shows the movie in fullscreen on the tv. Am I doing something wrong? I even tell the dvd that my tv type is 16:9. How do I fix it?

I'm just guessing, but I thought I read the Matrix was 2.35 to 1 or something like that. Not 16:9, which means it would still appear somewhat letterboxed, even on a widescreen TV.

Have you played it before on a DVD player on that screen or another 16:9 tv? Or, does the letterboxing change at when you try changing the PS2 and/or DVD settings?

if what you say is true, then that would suck, And no, this is the only screen I've tried it on.

does your TV have different display modes?

For instance, my Toshiba 57H81 has 4 modes

NORMAL - Puts Bars on the side
THEATHER WIDE 1 - stretches image more from top to bottom
THEATHER WIDE 2 - stretches image more from left to right
FULL - normal wide screen

However, if I am watching an HD channel that in is 4:3, I cannot stretch it to display as full screen on my TV...

If you want to see fullscreen, you need to buy a full screen DVD.

All changing the settings on the player will do is letterbox the widescreen movie in a 4:3 box and you have to use 4:3 zoom mode to fill the screen. It will still appear as a widescreen presentation.

That's why there are fullscreen and widescreen DVDs (some have both version on the same disc).

Wow this definately sucks, I thought I wouldn't have to endure the black bars anymore with my new widescreen tv but since I've noticed the aspect ratio is 2.35:1, I guess I'll still have to see the black bars. Are most dvd's 2.35:1? Why do they do this when most widescreen tv's are 16:9????

It's called artistic preference. And, see my post in the other thread.

Imagine something like Braveheart in the Academy ratio (1.33:1)...blech! You lose the panoramic effect.

Why do people trip about the black bars...

Some widescreen dvds are different aspect ratios, so they will display differently. Some will fill the entire screen, some won't.

I remember I was at a Hastings, and some lady was bitching at an employee because she rented a widescreen dvd, and it had the black bars. She said something like "well I paid to see the WHOLE movie, not parts cut off of it"

Did you NOT just ask the same question (and consequently get flamed for it) yesterday?

EDIT: LMAO, someone just brought it back from the dead.:D:beer:
