How can you learn to speed read? *Quiz*

I am a college student who must either read material, or plagiarize well. I am a "fast" reader, 700 SAT Verbal, and according to this site, I read @ 390 wpm, and have a comprehension rate of 91%. I want to be able to read faster than that! how can I improve my speed? Have you used any material, or courses to "speed read" ?

I took a speed reading class when i was in 7th grade. i was able to read at about 5000 wpm w/ a 90 reading comprehension. unfortunately I'm a verbal/audio learner and not a visual one. speed reading is primarily visual learning.

bottom line, what happened to me is that i developed a learning disorder that has plagued my till now.

make sure you understand your self and your needs before pursuing any type of speed reading course.

Not sure how improve this late in life. We had speed reading as a required course in my elementary school. I maxxed out on their charts and was still at 100% comprehension when the course was completed. 🙂

I think thats called "photo reading". Some company was selling photo reading program on late night phone order thing and the presenting guy could flip through page as fast as you realistically can and he comprehended real well. Well it looked like BS to me.

<< Right, I've seen that stuff too, and I also see books like this that make me think "hey maybe it is real" >>

I'm not afraid to say I don't believe BS on TV advertisement. If they were all true, I'd be much happier person. Lets easily make tons of money by being a distributor of cheapo products, star ta home office and see money flying at you, attach this electrogadet and watch your muscle grow before your eyes, take this crap pills and you'll have toned body and more crap that makes me think oh how I wish these were all true.

<< bah, get a major that's low on reading, like some science one. >>

I dunno what to do. I hate reading, but I am excellent at it. I hate math, but I am decent at it. I am a psych major because I have no idea what I really want to pursue. Building computers is fun, but comp sci & comp engineering are all math (it seems).

Psych major is a bad way to go, especially if you are not sure what you want to do. My sister says there are three people that were psych majors that work as janitors at Ericsson because there is nothing for them in the local job market with the degrees that they have.

Those kids working at a shop putting computers together make pretty close to min. wage. It isn't a whole lot more complex than building lego's.

Horrendous! No fcking way. Ok, suggest a major. BTW, I am at UB due to a lack of parental college funding.

Verbal: 700
Math: 610

I hated HS, and I really don't like school in general. I build comps, etc. I would rather spend 8 hours editing a paper and putting my name on the top, than 3 hours writing it myself... Does that answer the question right there? Some kinda editor?

just gotta add my 2 cents:

the ONLY way to get better at reading is to read more (or find a different strategy of reading such as reading in 4 word clusters, i read in sylable clusters)

those infomercials on TV where you see a guy just wave his hand and he says he read a page or that one where the guy is just scrolling down on a world processing file and claims he read it all
those are ALL SCAMS

there is no quick fix for anything.

i second the motion...psych is not the way to go for a major. You're wasting your time. I have two friends that graduated with a psych degree and after graduation one got a job as a hospital clerk (7 bucks the hour starting wage) and the other one has had odd jobs til now. They complain that they have a college degreeand pathetic jobs. Well, unless you get a phD in psych, your jobs won't amount to much. So dude, don't waste time and get a degree that will be worth it at the end, cause you don't want to come ball to school for a second degree....
