How can you improve quality of picture at 1024x768 on 17" LCD monitors?

I just picked up a Benq 17" FP731. It's pretty good at it's native resolution 1280x1024.
I assumed it would run the lower resolutions adequately, but I was wrong. I can't run at 1024x768 very well. This is the res. where fonts are easy to read etc.
Is there a way ... a utility or something... to improve this?
I ran the itune set up that comes with the monitor, but still no improvement.
I didn't realize you had to run in only the native resolution to get a good sharp picture. If this is the case, it's a serious set back with LCD's...

Nope there is no way. You are stuck with the crapiness. Unfortunately the crispy picture is only available at native resolution, hence why native resolution is referred to an LCD more than a CRT, who also has native resolutions or rather a resolution where It cannot go above. You should have researched before buying, now it may be a bit hard to return it.

Try these things.
Use the native resolution of the LCD. Select large fonts under the desktop appearance tab. And turn on Cleartype in the Advanced menu of appearance tab.

I'd give it a chance. At first, I too was disgruntled with having to live with 1280x1024 on a Hitachi 16ms panel. After a day or so, I adjusted to the different screen aspect ratio and did a few of gja88's suggestion (mostly screwed with icon size, box size, etc). Also try a couple of different themes, some are much larger by default, which at higher rez have the same size appearance as 1024x768. Now I would never go back to CRT. No headaches whatsoever any longer.

Give it a chance at native resolution for two weeks. You will probably get used to it.

I was also a dyed in the wool 1024X768 user, but I picked up a 19" LCD for home (1280X1024 res) and use a 17" LCD at work (1280X1024 as well). At first, it was too small for me, but I got used to it after two weeks.

Experiments with 1024 were unsatisfactory - LCDs all look like crap at their non-native resolutions, and beautiful at native.

Make sure to turn on ClearType for that LCD too - it helps even more with the text.

I've been using my 17" LCD since BFriday and like it, but I would like to go for truetype. It's not available in my pc. I'm going to check MS's website to see it it's a download.

Cleartype is an XP-only feature that helps with text a lot on LCD's. It mainly helps on DVI monitors, but it does a good job with plain analog LCD's as well.

You can turn on Cleartype under Display Properties > Appearance > Effects.

One reason 1024x768 looks like crap is because it is a 4x3 res while 1280x 1024 is 5x4 If u need try another 5x4 resolution and it should at least look decent. I belive u can get other odd resolutions using Rivara Tuner

Thanks. However, when I turned on Cleartype it started creatings a slight shadowing effect on the text reminiscent of my old rear projection TV after the color guns went out of synch. Red and green seem misaligned. I guess it's really for DVI.

i like setting the icon size to large on LCDs, they just seem nice and smooth and crisp... plus if youre running at a blindingly small res like 1280 it helps :)
looks sorta....Mac-esque... *shields face for saying that...*

by the way, i have the very same BenQ as you and i love it to death!!!

ive used about 6 of them, not one has had a single dead pixel!

Go to the color menu and select the USER profile, then set all values to 50. balances everything out nicely and gets you a nice bright white picture...the default color setting has a bit of reddish...

and run that BenQ auto adjust utility!

A CRT does not have a concept of a native resolution.

It's funny, you quoted the last part of his statement, but you didn't read it...

This is why some 17's suck so bad. Some 17's all 18's and 19's native is 12x10. On a 17 that is way too small so users like yourself are either stuck with tiny text or interpolation which is blurry.:( On 18's and 19's it's just fine even a little big on the 19.

Really? I was thinking I'd like a 1600x1200 17"... Increased clarity in games.
