Show the startup screen (at least for win98se), after I've formatted the HDD, absolutely no windows files on it, just dos system files. It only shows the splash screen for < 1 second, but how????

Yeah. If the system files for any win9x are on a fixed disk they show the splash screen, regardless of if windows is installed or if there's even anything else on the drive.

When does it show it?

If ya just formated the HD and then restart it should come up and say invalid system disk..

I did a format /s, so I just had command.com in my C: drive. The splash screen still shows for just a split second

format /s places msdos.sys, io.sys and command.com on the active partition.

msdos.sys and io.sys are hidden. The logo is located inside io.sys.

Yea even on my win2k box, if I use my win98 bootdisk, i get the win98 splash screen during the boot even though its never had win98 installed.
