How can under-21-year-olds travel?

I live in Ohio. I adore the west and the east where there's good hiking. Unfortunately, driving to either is wayyyyy too far, so I was thinking about flying. But the problem is, once I get off the plane, what do I do? I have no transportation to any of the good hiking places. Even if I took a bus into a park, I still wouldn't be able to get to a lot of the trailheads without my own car, or do LOTS of other things for that matter...

So are there any options for a 19-year-old like me as far as car rentals go?

You are above 18 you should be fine. At least I have seen ads in the yellowpages that say "we rent to 18 and under". So I assume 19 is no problem. Make sure you have insurance that covers you where you go.

Almost all car rental companies set the minimum age for rental at 21. I believe Enterprise is the only one that rents to 18 and over, but with an additional charge.

A go-kart and a crack team of specially trained hamsters should do the trick.

Drive or bus.

You can fly and then take other transportation to get to where you are going.

You'll need to look at smaller off-airport companies that usually have older vehicles in their fleet. You may need to arrange for a taxi to take you to/from the rental facilities. And of course, this all assumes you have a real credit card (no debit types), else forget the whole idea and stick with a bus schedule.

Most states you can rent a car when you are under 25/over 18, but they charge an extra $25 a day to rent the vehicle. Be careful, and read the fine print.

Lots of places don't rent to people under 25. Or if theuy do, they charge you a crapload extra.

Im 17. Ive rented a car, not with a big company like Hertz or something. But I paid something like $25 a day. All I had to do was show my insurance and sign the papers. And yes, they knew my age.

Most places don't rent to under 25. The few that do charge extra. Get a bicycle, take it apart and put it in your luggage with assembly tools. Reassemble upon arrival, problem solved.
