Isnt it hard to find out if your, say, new processor is defect when u get it??? Is the troubleshooting any easier from one defect essential component (the HD, RAM, mobo, CPU) to the other? How do u proceed when troubleshooting your problem?? I would REALLY like to know this!!!

Usually process of elimination is the way to go - you plug in a chip you know works, and then you test out the board. If it boots, then you can eliminate the motherboard from the "might-be-broken list." If it doesn't work, well, then it's most likely the motherboard.

Then you move on to the other components...

when you biuld a system you should put it togeather piece by piece.
that is, put the motherborad, cpu, ram (single stick), video card, hard drive, floppy, cd-rom drive, mouse and keyboard and see if it boots up. If you are missing something , or something isn't working it should come up on the screen, if the video card isn't working then it should beep. :)

If you have some old parts keep them close by just incase something doesn't work, eg, video isn't working, swap it with another and see if it works or not. This is the only way for sure that things work or not.

Once you have this basic system set up, install the opertaing system and then add each add on card etc, installing one by one. eg install the sound cardm then network card, modem, etc etc making sure each works properly before you install the next one.

Take your time and double check everything, and you should be fine. :)

If your cpu isn't detected at boot, then I'd say something is wrong. Could be your cpu isn't plugged in right, motherboard isn't configured right, your motherboard is broke, or the cpu is broke.

Are you like saying you think you have a broken cpu?

Start with just your Motherboard, one stick of RAM, video and floppy. From there keep on adding cards. If your CPU isn't being recongnized, give it another seating in its socket/slot and see if that does the trick. If it doesn't, then you're probably looking at a bad motherboard and/or CPU.

well Im sure you would have problems with no cpu in the mobo(I think that's what you meant)

I had this type of problem when I built my current computer...plugged in my celeron and nothing plugged in my friends p3 733 nothing..so it was the mobo...sent it back to pcnut and he gave me another one rma via and mobo was at my place next day!!! so the elimination was very easy.

NO that was NOT what I meant, Dark4. What I meant was that if u dont have any OTHER CPUs (NOT the new one) that can fit your mobo then u would have troubles....

So its no problem to find out the problem if it is the RAM or HD, then???
But HOW can u find out whether it is the CPU or the mobo that is broken??

testing testing testing..... you just need to have a mobo and CPU that you KNOW work, and test that way.

Now here's what sucks.. when something *sorta* breaks 2 weeks into the road... pinpointing can be a pain....

Umm, it's DarkAngel. :D

See if your friends have any processors like yours. If not, you're SOL.
