How can the same road have 2 different speed limits depending on direction.

This is a construction zone. Basically it is a 2 lane street, 1 lane in each direction. Going west half of the construction zone is 45mph limit, and then it drops to 35. But going east the whole construction zone is 35mph. I don't get how you can have different speed limit going east and west. It is is the same street.

I got a speeding ticket for this several years ago but was not a construction zone. this two lane country road i got popped on was 55 west but 40 east. I was going east and the cop clocked me at 54. went to court and bitched to judge and he reduced it to a 4 point ticket down to a $20 obstructed window charge.

are these permanent signs or signs put up by the construction guys? if its the construction guys, maybe they forgot to put up a sign?

They are put up by the county I think. They are not perminant, they are only for the constuction. It is the same part of the road that has the different signs. So they didn't forget to put a sign up.

Also incidently most people seem to ignore these signs and go 55+ mph. I have yet to see any consturction vehicals on these roads.

yeah, penndot (where i work) posts different speed limits in both directions on the same road all the time. its perfectly legal and enforceable.
edit: its usually done due to sight distance differences, volume of traffic entering and exiting at an intersection, etc.

my town does something similar. 25 one direction, 30 in another. cops sit in the middle and pull over anyone who does 35.

That's annoying.
In the UK we can't have different speed limites for each direction, even where it makes sense (like up/down a steep hill going into/out of a built up area).

On a highway that I travel for work (on the way to Whistler) has a construction zone speed limit of 50 km/h. Road is the same as it was before they started doing the work on the sides, however when there's no construction going on, they leave the 50km/h signs up, instead of just uncovering the 80km/h signs. Gotta love having a mile of traffic behind me cause of the billboards that I drive (Greyhound buses).

Sometimes a road is along a city/county line: one side of the road is in one city/county, the other side is in another.

Different cities/counties will set the speed limit differently.

I see this all the time, just make sure your going the lower of the two when you see a cop on the side of the road.
