How can the following be done?

He abruptly left the company so I couldnt ask him but he has this cool setup.
He has a windows xp laptop and a fedora desktop that is hooked up to an LCD monitor.
He would type and use an external mouse (ONLY 1) to navigate on the laptop and when he scrolls to the far right of his laptop screen, he ends up on the LCD monitor whicih is situated to the right of his laptop! That's pretty cool since he wouldnt need to switch mouse, but im not sure about keyboard.

Anyways, ive heard of xinerama but one winxp and a fedora hooked to an external monitor?

Basically he used a program called synergy that allows someone to do exactly that over a lan,

"Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s). "

Use it on macs linux and windows

Might have been using the desktop as a fullscreen VNC (or other remote) session, then just use xin or something

Holy crap ...
that's awesome ....

I'm gonna take a look at this when I get home ...
Though I never really use the GUI on my main Linux box, this might change things ...

It beats having two keyboards and mouse on my damn desk. Now I just have 2 LCDs w/ one keyboard and mouse.
My stupid ibook's lid cant be shut because that would then put the laptop to "sleep." I need me a powerbook.

Sorry if I'm reviving a dead thread, but I just want to post an update.

I've been running Synergy for about the last 5 days at home to share my mouse and keyboard between a Slackware and WinXP box.
It is really really awesome.
Even with heavy network activity, it doesn't seem to have any noticeable latency issues.
I love the clipboard sharing as well.

Lilcam, thanks for the original post!
sr3yas, thanks so much for the link!

Back in my day we'd control two PCs with one keyboard and mouse via a KVM switch...

*grumbles*

KVM's still serve a purpose.

This is much more fluid and for some purposes it's clearly better.

It gets rather awkward having to take your had off the keyboard or mouse to switch a KVM (though I know with a lot of modern KVMs that isn't the case any more, as you can switch via keystroke combinations)
.
Also, last time I cheked, a KVM doesn't let you share the clipboard.

Also, KVM's are not free.
Also, KVM's require more wires and connections, more possible points of failure!

:)

Kids these days, with their MP3 and their keystroke combinations!

I know what you mean, though, each has its own niche :).
