My friend said his tires were messed up and I checked it out. I out to feel the tread and it was FLAT. COMPLETELY FLAT. NO TREADS WHATSOEVER. How can you be so idiotic. Do people not take their cars to maintenance? Do people not rotate/balance tires? What the hell? And I went to Tahoe last weekend with him (I got my own ride up there), and he drove there. I would never ride in his car. Are people so idiotic? I know people who crashed there 2 weeks ago even while driving carefully, and now my friend wants to go again this week. There's without a doubt there will be a storm this weekend. I don't get what people are thinking. Good luck with that car.

What's worse is that a month ago after we got back from Tahoe (we took someone else's car), it was POURING in Davis, CA. he wanted to go eat and offered to drive. I'm cautions, prudent and safe so I was like "Fvck no dude, I'll drive my car," even though I don't even go to school there. I'd rather have someone navigate me around than to drive in the rain with someone's tires that are completely worn out.

Treadless Tires are probably fine in dry weather. Its just more surface area in contact with the ground. But in Rain, that thing is skidding

I was 20 before I learned what "rotating tires" was for. I was quite deeply confused as to why this was something which required a mechanic. Wheels rotate constantly, right? Its their sole reason for existing. 
Once I found out what it was, it made a lot more sense.
I am to cars what some people are to computers. Today I showed someone else how to use a USB thumbdrive, and then showed her the wonders of the scroll wheel on a mouse.
I never had much interest in learning how to fix cars because they're dirty and oily. I never cared for getting dirty. I will get dirty if necessary, but I prefer to avoid it if I have the option.
Once I found out what it was, it made a lot more sense.

:laugh: I used to think rotating tires meant lifting the car, taking out the wheels and put them right back on so that the screw thing aligned differently to each hole in the wheel.

No he's definitely a nice guy. A good friend. I've known him since kindergarten and I tell him to go get his damn tires rotated. I don't think he takes it very seriously though. You know thing like "Oh I'll drive cuz it's raining out there and I don't wanna die in your car" jokingly should send the message right? I mean come on. We're 21/22, and people should learn to take care of themselves.
I'm not a car expert myself, but I take my tires into America's Tire Co. every semester to get them rotated/balanced. I also ask them each time if my tread is still ok (well when I visually think that it's starting to get down to the last few thousand miles), and usually they'll tell me to come back next time because I'm good for another 5k at least or whatever. I've done penny tests, and even I worry sometimes when I have to go up to Tahoe and my tires are on the last 5k miles.
I just don't get how people don't give a crap about their car like that. I remember someone's tires totally underpressure for a good month in high school before I found them and pointed it out to them.
No wonder there are so many accidents out on the road.

I've seen people driving cars with no tread in SoCal. We really could use an annual state safety inspection because clearly people cannot do this on their own...and those the the fuckers who end up crashing into those of us who actually maintain our cars. :|

That's not true actually. A bald tire will give significantly less traction on a dry road than a new treaded tire.

A car to lots of people (including me) is just a cage that takes you places and are essentially forced to know how to use. Even basic maintenance requires some interest or caring. On that note, I know someone who's been driving for more than 5 years and doesn't know what the N on the gear shift is. That and what the x1000 RPM dial is.
I actually never understood why I had an annual safety inspection here in Virginia (it was every two in NJ) until realizing how many of my friends and coworkers were completely ignorant to basic maintenance. I worked with a guy who was proud of the fact that he probably couldn't change his own oil in a pinch. I know people who've run their car empty of oil. The list could go on.
People like me and you who go in to get the sticker because we've already taken care of the problems over the course of the year, not expecting a laundry list of items to fix, are apparently not the norm.

I used to drive a '69 Pontiac Catalina that when a tire went flat I just drove it on the rim to a gas station and had them swap out that tire with one of the $5 junkyard tires I kept in the trunk.
Those were the days.
