I leave for work every morning around 5:00 AM. There is a 4 lane divided residential road that is posted 25MPH speed limit. It curves through a neighborhood and passes a couple of decent sized ponds that hosts a nice sized population of geese and ducks. The city has gone so far as to post warning signs to be aware in this little stretch of road that there may be geese crossing at times and to use caution. This morning as I approached this area I could see one dead goose in the right lane and in my lane one was sitting and staring at me as I approached. Since it wasn't moving I stopped to check on it. It was probably about 3-4 months old and at minimum had a broken wing and possibly broken legs. In any case it was alive and obviously in some pain but there was not any signs of blood so it wasn't going to be dead any time soon yet people had driven by it and just ignored it. Fortunately my wife does volunteer work for the local wildlife rehab folks so I called her for help. With the help of a city cop she came up and got the injured goose and we will find out later today if it will be euthanized or rehabed. In any case I don't understand how people could just ignore this thing sitting in the road suffering.
Edit: Well my wife just called to tell me it died.
I guess there were internal injuries that were not visible when we got it out of the road.
