How can NY state be planning a 9% budget INCREASE for 2010?

StageLeft

No Lifer
What the fvck is wrong with these ass mongrels in Albany?

NY state annual budget is somewhere around $100B. This year their deficit is so huge ($16B) that they are threatening to get rid of 8900 jobs of the 200k state jobs. BTW, I believe that NY state already has the most, per capita, state employees of any state and the highest overall taxes.

Nonetheless, they are talking about a huge increase for 2010, fed in part by stimulus from the federal gov and in part by increased taxes and fees and, of course, in part by deficit spending.

Is it any wonder this state is losing population and constantly scaring away business with its exhorbitant taxes?

Wait wait... democrats, spending more and more, and increasing taxes to do it? Stop the presses! 😉

skoorb, they can't help it, it's a part of their fundamental philosophy: bigger government, more government spending, more taxes. And yes, I'm well aware that the republicans did just the same thing (well, the big government and spending part) from 2000 to 2006, and that makes me equally :|

It probaly because all the unemployement the state needs to Pay out to all the Wall street F*cks so they can continue to make payments on their houses in the Hamptons

We need to return to the good old days of two months ago where the rich get richer and the poor go to under-funded prisons. I'm sick of this liberal shit. Let the sick drop dead in the streets and kids get their education in jail. I got mine. Fuck you.

I normally wouldn't give a rat's ass about the budget increase but since a) NY already has one of the highest taxes and b) they're financing this increase through taxpayers and not just the stimulus = you have a good point. I would never move to that fcking awful state. At least NJ has a relatively cheap state and gas tax, my advice would be to move there Skoorb.

Makes sense. Economy contracts and govt expands.

In this case, its the Democrats in washington forcing them to expand.

Step 1 is complete. Step 2 is withdrawing the stimulus money and maintaining the same permanent level of state entitlements. Step 3 is crying about how they need more revenue for the children. Step 4 is radical tax increases.

Why doesnt Obama just kick gov Patterson out ... just like he did the CEO of GM? After all, both GM and NY are getting Fed $$

You can expand that to the federal level as well.

Probably because he's blind and Obama already has slammed disabled people once.

I don't mind Patterson. I know several radical leftie college students at NYU who are all radical pro abortion pro tax pro socialized healthcare envirofundies who screamed bloody murder when Patterson tried to tax soda at 18%.

At least they'd get their due.

Then step 5 is Negative prosperity

They should cut state jobs. NYS has the highest number of government workers per capita in the US.

Increasing the budget is moronic though. They need to cut back on the special districts and the huge number of government employees and then see where they are in terms of money. Of course, the powerful unions in the state won't allow that. Why should they have their jobs affected during a recession?

I really like where I am right now. I just hope that I continue to like it.

Well, not sure if you have a family or not but Delaware is also a better state you could move to (no sales tax). But that means you'd have to find a job in south NJ/Delaware which isn't all that easy (not sure what industry you're in). But all in all, a nice area although biased because I grew up there.

All things considered, some people do have it better than us but happiness is all in the eye of the beholder and what you're willing to concede. 😉

I would recommend that New Yorkers sell their Penthouses and buy large Yachts, then anchor them out in international waters and declare that their new office/residence. 😀

I'm all for that, and while he's at it he should kick out every politician representing the U.S. and then step aside himself.

I don't get NYS either, stop spending money sounds so simple, start cutting back on disability abusers, start charging a couple of NY sport teams for their stadiums, cut back on state workers and unneeded positions. But when I reflect on that statement it's seems impossible since NYS is modeled after the federal government.

California has the same problem. Entitlements have guaranteed pay increases, thus the budget rises infinitely.

Gov. David Paterson and legislative leaders that finalized a balanced state budget Sunday night got some feedback Monday from interested parties.

The proposed $131.8 billion budget that lawmakers will vote on increases spending by 9 percent and includes roughly $7 billion in higher taxes.

?We made the tough choices,? Paterson said. ?If the Legislature can maintain this [spending] discipline over the next few years, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I can?t tell you that our fiscal woes are over?that wouldn?t be honest. We have not found the floor of this recession.?

?We did the best we could in a difficult situation,? added Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith (D-Queens). ?This was an unprecedented time. As I?ve said before, we cannot cut our way back to prosperity.?

Gov. David Paterson said Friday that the upcoming state budget will contain ?record spending cuts? that close part of a record-high, $16.2 billion budget deficit.

9% growth when Obama's economy is shrinking by 6% is quite a record.

Obama's economy? After 2 months? So wait if he's directly responsible now after just 2 months, then you agree the October fallout and the whole financial collapse was Bush's economy then correct?

Thank you for agreeing with all of us that the Bush / republican economy was foul😀.

That was all Clinton's fault.

Bzzzz. That would be incorrect.

California is #1 - followed by Texas.

here is a breakdown by funtion (pdf) from the Census.

I now return this thread to its typical rancor and 'colorectal-facts'.

What part of "per capita" do you not understand?

Bzzz. That would be incorrect, as I said "per capita". Of the big states, NY is in the lead for number of government employees per citizen: http://www.ppinys.org/reports/jtf/stlocgovtpay.htm

Then in government spending per capita, it ranks #2 http://www.ppinys.org/reports/jtf/spending.htm

NY is #1 for Individual Income Tax per Capita: http://www.ppinys.org/reports/jtf/incometaxes.htm

NY is #1 for State and Local taxes per capita: http://www.ppinys.org/reports/jtf/stlocaltaxes.htm

Here's a great example where the state and local governments could save some money:

Long Island's 179 fire agencies have the best trucks money can buy, and plenty of them: more than New York City and the city and county of Los Angeles put together, which protect almost three times as much land and six times as many people and answer more than 12 times as many calls for help.
http://www.newsday.com/news/sp...intruc,0,1393545.story

Things like this have gotten way out of hand in NY, funneling money down the drain.

That firefighting story is awesome
Melville owns two 3,000 gallon-per-minute pumpers that are 50 percent more powerful than anything in the arsenal of the FDNY. Yet no hydrant in the Melville district is capable of producing that much water.
It seems that the it is all paid for locally though, so it really doesn't fit within the thread and the problems with the state budget.
