How can "Mummy Returns" top Episode 1 opening weekend?

Triumph

Lifer
I don't believe that, someone must be fudging the numbers or something. There were people lined up out the door for hours and hours for Episode 1 nearly everywhere. Do you see that happening for the Mummy Returns? Uhhhh, no I don't think so. And the first Mummy movie wasn't even a smash hit or anything that would make people anticipate a sequel that much! I don't get it. It is, in effect, illogical.

Its this damn inflation I tell ya--peeps everywhere are payin $8-$10 for a movie ticket these days. Wait...Episode 1 isn't that old...oh well there goes the inflation argument...

ALL shows around here were sold out from 6pm and up. When I saw it with friends we showed up 45 minutes early and we still got ass quality seats.

I didn't think it was that great, but not horrible. Much better than EP1. That was plain suck. I hope JarJar rots in hell :|

Radeon,

Wait till you see Jar Jar's Mommy Returns! :Q

A truly shocking experience...

Hey You (No Doubt)

Went to one theater for the 7pm show they were running it in a couple rooms and they were already sold out till the 12am show. So we went about 30 mins down the road and got in.

Probably cause Episode 1 sucked donkey butt. But that is my opinion, and you may not like it. And I only paid $6 for my Mummy Returns ticket. No inflation here.

shoot, I didn't fund it.... but i might try to catch an afternoon showing at a half dead thetre by my place... it's old, so no one goes thier, but they do enough business to stay open... so it's cool.

I didn't go to the movie either, but I did go to Episode 1, and it was sold out several days in advance around here. We bought out tickets WAY ahead of time. Even then the movie was sold out around here for several weeks. Didn't they say that the Mummy did 70 mil this past weekend?

Just out of curosity, why do they release how much money a film makes? Wouldn't it be better if they release how many tickets were sold? With inflation, it's not an accurate measure of how popular a movie is compared to older films.

i agree Episode 1 sucked, but everyone still went to see it. I mean really, "The Mummy" does not stir the same interest in people as anything Star Wars related.

Besides the fact that Episode 1 suck ass?

Well, for starters it's actually entertaining, and second, it has a larger audience appeal. How many 12-18 year old girls actually attended Episode 1? Brendan Fraiser is still a "hunk" in these girls' eyes so you get a decent sized audience there. The rock is in there so you pulled in a bunch of wraslin fans that probably didn't have much desire to watch episode 1. There are a lot of house wives that could give a flying fart about some science fiction flick, but wouldn't mind watching Brendan Fraiser in a fairly enjoyable movie.

Bottom Line - Mummy Returns has a FAR GREATER audience category that Episode 1 could have ever dreamed of.

Don't forget that EP1 had limited release requirements for theaters. Certain sound quality, Certain darkness etc... They opened in (cinematic terms) very few locations. If EP1 had opened as a normal venue then the sales would have double/tripled for opening weekend.

Mummy breaks Star Wars record

There is really no "easy" way to decide which movie did the best. Inflation around here has caused ticket prices to go up since Star Wars debut. However, you can't do ticket sale numbers either because the population grows everyday. Someone could formulate a equation to take all of the necessary things into consideration. Just wait till Episode 2 comes out. The record will be broke again. I'll contribute to that one too 😉

BTW, I loved JAR-Jar Binks!!! He's great.

"Brendan Fraiser is still a "hunk" in these girls' eyes"

Encino Man!!! 😀

I Get Weak (Belinda Carlisle)

Its because ticket prices are getting stupider and stupider; I don't even go to movies on the weekends now. $10/ticket + snacks? Um, no!

That and the fact the world is going to hell. Brendan Fraiser. gah!

I hated jar jar as much as the next guy but you people make me cry when you put down EP1 so much. True its not as good as the "first 3", but come on! Have a heart.

Anyway another fact is that if mummy sold out theaters then it doesn't matter if 6X as many people wanted to see EP1 because a sold out theater is a sold out theater. It was a couple of years ago too; there are probably more theaters around now...

I thought it was entertaining, I thought the Rock did horrible. :Q
I think it was worth it to see it at a theater with awesome sound and awesome screen. 🙂

I'm in Canada and I only pay $6.50 for a DTS equipped theater with very reasonably sized screens. $10 US? ouch....

Movie was entertaining as hell and very funny. That's why it beat star wars. Also remember 50% of star wars ticket sales were the pimply nerd types seeing it 3 times a day. 😉

Just because people bought EP1 tickets 3 days in advancedoesnt mean that there were more people at that movie. It only means people THOUGHT there would be more people. Whether the tickets were sold 3 days or 3 minutes before the show, the same number of people attended.

BTW in Ft Wayne, IN people were lined up to be seated about 40 minutes before showtime... all of them I think. There wasn't an empty seat in the house... except that broken one across the aisle from me.
